So the funky noise was the fan clutch, not the waterpump. It failed "on" over the weekend in Chico and Paradise. My car sounds like a giant swamp cooler. I already bought the fan clutch, but how do I take it off, can I leave the pump and the belts on and just unbolt from the pulley? Any do's or don't's? Let me know thanks for the help guys.

When I replaced mine, I just removed the fan shroud (sp?) and just unbolted the fan clutch from the water pump and pulled it out with the fan connected. I didn't loosen the belts or have to tighten the belts afterwords. It was pretty quick and easy.

Good luck.

dont use a crappy 12 point wrench when trying to remove the nuts, they will round off. good 6 point wrench required or at least was on mine.

I helped GeoRoss do his recently. We had to pry the mutha off. It had some corrosion inside and didn't want to let go. 2 big screwdrivers and some patience.

OK after reading some of your other replies maybe the later models are different. Don't do what I did if you have a 94!

Yup.

No c clip on mine. 4 12mm nuts and the sucker comes off. No need to remove the fan shroud either--at least I didn't have to and no damage to the rad. fins.

I second RT's suggestion for 6 pointed wrench instead of 12 point.

Here are some pics....old and new.

Ross and I both have 94's. No C-clip. We removed the 4 nuts then tried to pull the whole unit off. The large pin in the center of those 4 bolts was just stuck to the clutch, maybe loctite or maybe just some corrosion, but we had to use 2 screwdrivers to rock it a little back and forth until it worked of the pin. They new one went on like butta.

see post #8 2nd pic down. That hole in the center just wouldn't let go of the pin it sits on.

Hey, where did you get that oil cap with the TEQ on it? I'm still looking for my '710' cap ;)

OK, now here is the part where I admit that I was asleep at the keyboard this morning. I mixed and matched two threads. I thought you guys were doing the AC clutch. Sorry! Ignore my stupidity above.

710 cap is probably off a 2F motor. You are lucky that the fan clutch failed in the on position, as apposed to the off no workie position, like most of us.

beno, cool TEQ oil cap. Mine doesn't say TEQ, just regular print about the oil type.

ps. you need to cut back on the ciggs a little there bro. :)

Seconding the cigs comment. Hey, is that new one a factory part? They're considerably different.

DougM

the new ones from Dan are made by Aisin, they are a 3 speed clutch, he old ones made by Eaton are a two speed.

they look diffrent externally but of coourse bolt up just fine to the fan and water pump.

From a 2F engine. That is correct.

:grinpimp:

Looks better on the 1FZ cover.

Yeah, I know about the smoking.

Ironically, I ran a half-marathon this past Sunday in Cleveland and came in 299th place with eight minute miles...I guess if I quit smoking, I'd be under 7 and possibly ready for Boston!

New part IDoug per RT.

did the clutch, rounded one of the nuts and had to use the handy vise grip, other than that, it was 4 bolts, the pulley slightly moves away from the water pump but everything buttons back up together nice without doing the belts, we will see how she be running all day tomorrow, I tore apart the old one, does not look like the unit could be rebuilt for a spare, anybody succeed in rebuilding it?

I re oiled mine on my 2H diesel and put the pics in the 70 section a while ago. I am not sure of your prices for the tubes of silicone oil but if they need 8 or more tubes its not viable over here also you need to consider the bi metal spring etc. Will be looking at the 80 this week.

on my fanclutch the shaft is catching and seizing really badly, so I would need to pull the transmission assembly off and out of the housing, it looks like it is permanently pressed on. The bimetallic spring and veins look OK. When you turn it it feels like something is actuall broken in there. Is there an assembly drawing for the clutch unit itself out there?

by the way I have this fanclutch part ways pulled apart, it is truly a feat of engineering, it is a tiny automatic transmission it looks like, very cool, I need to see the assy. parts drawing if anybody has it, this little guy should be on modern marvels!

The one you took apart is a POS compared to the blue hub one! They are a work of art.

Yeah but how do you take apart more than that? By the way the one that came out of the truck looks exactly like this one so I am confused about the POS comment, besides the oil being dirty. But I need to pull the flywheel out of the other housing. I am afraid i will need like a really good size hydraulic press to press the shaft out?
