any suggestions on some good spots to wheel -and a good spot to camp- in the Anza Borrego State Park area? Truckhaven? Ocotillo Wells?

Will go tomorrow for a few days to explore, wheel, and hike...

Anybody would like to meet, let me know! :)

Funny timing. I just wrote up a trip report on a few of the trails in the area. Far from inclusive but they were fun and the view was superb. Check the link for the report and some pics. I used the Guide To Southern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails to scope a few runs out and found it to be very helpfull. I haven't been there besides this trip in a long time so Lower Coyote Canyon and Calcite Mine Rd are the only ones I can difinitively reccomend. If you come in through Borrego springs there is a visitor center at the north/center of town that has a surprisingly helpfull map for $1. :D I will PM you my cell # if I can help anymore feel free to call me. I will most likely be gone from 3:30 till late but I will answer if I can.

I'm going to be exploring this area Saturday (Dec 30th).

I was able to drive through there just before Thanksgiving. I didn't have much time to really see what's out there, but the washes I ran were fun.

Going to find a visitors center on the way in and pick up one of those $1 maps :hillbilly:.

I have always camped off of S22 at Peg Leg. It is past Borrego and the airport on the way to the Salton Sea. After the airport the road makes a sweeping left towards the dump and right at the sweeping right to go straight to Salton Sea is Peg Leg. It's a nice open space for camping and pleanty of open space for the kids to ride around camp on there little bikes.

Saw a bunch of folks camping there Thanksgiving. Is that area primarily for dirtbikes/atv's?

No, its for anything. When we go there are 3 VW Manx, Jeeps, Tundra, and now my LC. The kids ride quads and little buggies around the camp and all over that open area and all other bikes need to have plates and registration to go out and about on the trails. So that keeps most of the bikers in Ocatillo.

Ocotillo is mostly dirt bikes. However ive been there with desert trucks and 4 wheeldrives many times. It's just a desert setting that attracts many types. You can get away from the camp area and go wheel off near truckhaven or head south more and into Anza. It's kind of a nice base camp.

Go try the sand blowhill :)

There are a group of 20+ Fj's going to Anza on Jan6th, for a day trip. And yes ! they seem to breed like rabbits. I was one of three Silver Fj in the Dana Point Harbor parking lot this morning.

With all of you FJ's multiplying like this we are going to have you all neutered before you are allowed to wheel with us. :flipoff2:

Sorry Stan, I couldn't help it. ;)

Now that Eric is starting his own family, he may need one of these.

Cograts to a proud FIL.

*Since Eric is out wheeling and we are stuck here I will go ahead with hijack. *

Congratulations to Eric and I am glad you can put up with my sense of humor Stan.

Smitty, you are shameless. :flipoff2:

OK, back.

Went all over the place. Did a bunch of trails and a lot of exploring.

Had a great time!

saw a couple of 80s, talked to one of our own. And saw one 40. A few FJCs around. Riverside 4 wheelers were out at Truckhaven.

too much to write about after New Year's eve, but the 80 did great as usual. Anybody wants specific info on trails etc, PM me.

I think I saw you (Sat, Dec 30th). If it was you, you passed me on S22 going towards Truckhaven and waved. Couldn't get my hand out the window fast enough. I had just come down from Calcite Mine and was headed towards Rockhouse (west). Also saw a Blue 40 out and about in Truckhaven.

We could have hooked up!

Maybe next time.
