Is that Devils Dropoff? or the drop off after Devils Drop-off?
Looks kinda like it.
Here I am on Devils Drop-off

Oh and I hear the 78 is closed right now. Because I usually go to Borrego the last weekend in January with friends and this year we are moving it to Plaster City.

I'll have to look that one up. If I get my power steering pump done tomorrow, I was going to join a mostly FJ group for a day run up lower Coyote Canyon.

everything was open coming from the East as of 4 days ago...

if you mean the Arroyo Seco del Diablo dropoffs, I did try to go back up the first one just to prove the books wrong. That is some fine sand! After a couple of tries and using momentum I was able to get to within 20 ft of the end of the sand hill up on top. But I was still at 32 psi. I have no doubt that if I had lowered it to 20 or less I would have been able to go back up all the way. Just didn't want to bother. 80s rule!

Was a tad narrow in a couple of places down below, but nothing too bad.

Yep - coming from the correct direction this time!

I thought it faster to get to Bor Springs from the East side coming from way up North. The roads from the Coast are pretty slow IIRC.

That is funny, the ladies at the info center tried to talk me out of going there. They said I would roll off and die.  Unfortunately my Pop started to fee bad so I had to skip it untill next time.

This Diable drop-off warnings thing is overhyped. They tell you it's a one way thing. Well, that's true, it is if you have a limited wheeler and the second one could be trouble if you had a very wide truck. Admittedly, it's not trivial to go back up the first one. But seems like much of the warnings is that after the first one you are committed to the second drop off which is supposedly much worse. Actually it really isn't that bad, roughness wise. Just one narrowish spot but no biggie. There is then about a 1/4 mile of boulders with another narrow spot or 2. Altogether not that big a deal.
The point seems to be more that if you go down the first one you are doomed to keep on going. That's kind of true but not that big a deal. The dropoffs themselves are not dangerous at all. The first one is just a steep sandy hill but not that bad. I did it once down forward and then 2 or 3 times back up and then down again in reverse. Not even very steep sides to it.
Worst thing that would happen I think is that you'd end up with a scraped or banged up truck.
Then again, you have to remember that hardly any of the trails at AB are challenging by our standards. They are mostly all flat sandy washes and doable in just about any SUV or pickup truck... I can see that your average city slicker might get a bit spooked by the steepness, sand and boulder. When I did the bypass road on S. Coyote, there were several trucks parked at the bottom that didn't go up. (In fact, when I came up there were several guys checking the boulders and talking animatedly. Of course, I had to show off and went right up under their noses without stopping and making sure to wave languidly... :D )
I also heard bad things about the Calcite Mine road and it was pretty tame too.

Agree totally, I think that is exactly who they are lecturing to. I tried to explain but they just couldn't grasp it so I gave up.

LMAO!

That one is my idea of a scenic byway. Great scenery but like driving on a paved road. :D Will definitely be out to explore more before too long.

Yeah, The two drops were my first outing in the 80 and second trip behind the wheel. (First Trip was Coyote Canyon in my Dad's 72 Scout.) The drop offs were nothing compared to what I have ridden on and yes it's a little narrow after the second drop but you have about 3" to spare.
Oh and after the wash widens you have to look back over your left shoulder to find a rare geological incline. See Pics.

No. It was just one of the many drops in Truckhaven.

Would like to do the dropoffs just to say I've done them. Both books I have said "stay clear" unless you're modified enough to tackle it or are "full size". From what I've read here, it doesn't seem as bad as it's been portrayed.

there is another oneway dropoff on Pynion Road, but haven't done that one. Somebody go have a look and post here?

Pinion Mtn. that might be the one I was thinking/read about.

The only one i remember being any sort of a challenge was Heart Attack Hill and that was for people with open diffs and small tires ... if you were locked up you were fine. I dont know how it is now. It's been way too long.

This was in 2000?2001? something like that.

I really like my Backroads Adventures (?) book. It lists quite a few trails in AB. Nice to know what to expect.
