Check with Jim C. too I know that he offers a pulley. However, you have to do a complete desmog, and if you don't do it right, you'll end up with problems etc.etc.etc. Check for threads on desmog for more info.

Lots of threads on this -
can also just gut the pump and put it back in if unless you want a full desmog.
I take it yours has seized?

no, I believe mine's still spinning; however i'm not sure it's functioning. I'm still trying to figure out the problem after about a month and a half. I don't have the emissions manual to diagnose my problems either:mad:

There of course is the dreaded "SST tool" to truly measure the output of the pump.
A much easier way is to pull the inlet hose off of the air cleaner with the truck running and see if its sucking air.
If it's sucking, then its not the cause of your emissions problems.
What are your symptoms?

Jim C. idler

I have Jim C. idler; no problems after 14K miles so far. It is about $100.

ok i hear there's alot of problems with cutting out your smog pump .... i don't understand ???..... i removed the vanes from inside my pump, plug the vacume line to my egr, disconected all other vacume lines but left them in place, (so it looks like it's still in play)swaped carb to a holly 2bbl out of a dodge ram,and installed a dui dizzy ... it runs great... its old has low compression and a ton of miles on her but i don't see any "problems" what should i be experiencing???????

If it ain't broke, dont' fix it...or so they say. I removed the vanes and ran my smog pump as a pulley for awhile with no problems. After a few hundred miles it seized as I was going down the highway. The belt melted in a mighty cloud of reaking smoke. I was able to pull off to a service station before for my engine overheated (barely). I suspect the pump was just old and the bearing finally wore out. Who knows, maybe I had the belt too tight. I still think $100. for an idler pulley is worth not having that happen. Just my .02. Other than that I have no problems with a desmogged engine. Just got back from a 32 hour driving tour from Jackson MS to Rockport TX and back.

Instead of putting on a pulley you can add a second alt for about $150. Direct bolt up and you get something for your money. I always hate spending money and not getting some kind of improvement.

ohhh i didn't just remove them cause i could ... one pump locked up ....replaced it with another one i had ...went on long trip acouple weeks later ''on return this one locked up ''sat on route 80 for 8 hours waiting for tow.....got home opened the frist pump devane ..install life is good that was two years ago knock knock on wood..........also reconfigued belts so if it goes again i can still run the water pump.........

It's been said many times before but is your ps pump leaking? it is the death of smog pumps

What is the application for the second alternator? Sounds like a great solution.

time to install pulley

How hard is it to put in an idler pulley as well as a complete desmog?

I have posted a long explaination before.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=128537&highlight=alt

The application is that i needed to replace my smog pump and I wanted more juice. I thought the mean green alt was pricey, so I took my smog pump to an alt shop. They found a delco replacement unit that matched the smog pump holes perfect. I now have 2 independent systems. One battery and alt for factory equipment and one battery and alt for all aftermarket things.

Not hard. The SOR idler bolts in place on the smog pump mount. Perfect fit. I use the original bolt(s)? (can't remember if its 1 or 2). As for desmog--its a little trickier, but even a non-mechanic like myself can follow the emissions manual and the threads posted in the tech section on this forum. Several guys have posted up photos of the setup. It's fun yanking all that junk out and leaves lots of space to move around.
