Since this seems to be a popular Fairey thread that gets bumped every so often I'm going to include the install manual I scanned years ago for anyone who may need it in the future.

If the overdrive housing fits into the tcase where the tailshaft bearing was, it is not an overseas case.

yes

the thickness is different but the problem is the different teeth and pitch?
don't know if one was built overseas or not, i bought a transfer case that is the same as mine, so it won't work. trying to figure it out.

If the width doesn't match it's not going work. Has nothing do with over seas but production date. Mid 63 until 7/80 Toyota made the one piece transfer used during that time period. As far as I know there are only two gearing versions. US market the change was 4/75. Earlier have narrower gears. Later are wider. They is a version that had a bigger idler shaft. Those were very late or possible a replacement transfer case for the later style.

Bottom line match the thickness of the overdrive gear with the one on the idler gear it should work. Mismatched will not work.

That's what I have heard the thickenss of the gear, these gears won't mesh, will check with the vendor Have you heard of a 31 tooth transfercase?
the manual says for a 31 tooth transfercase for fj 40s from 7504-7901?

You do realize 4/75 was over forty years ago and many FJ40s no longer have all their original parts. I bought a transmission and transfer for the core cost minus shipping cost ($50). These were pulled out of a 78 but are late 74 production. earlier have twenty-nine teeth. Later have thirty-one teeth.

Here are some Fairey Overdrives. The ones on each end and the one in the center have twenty-nine teeth on the transfer case input gear. The other two have thirty-one teeth. Easy to see how much wider the input gear is on the thirty-one teeth gears.

no the gears won't mesh, transfercase has 29 gears overdrive has 31.

You are not understanding what I am saying. I am helping you to rule out the possibility of an overseas case by referencing PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS, not gears. I could answer your question regarding your gears, but years of hanging around with @Poser have taught me that sometimes it's better to let other people get some exercise jumping to conclusions.

Mark this has been on going since the poster joined in April 2016. Posted about the gear count in at least two other threads he either started or posted in. Not sure why he doesn't get the difference in the transfer gears and why you have to match the overdrive gear tooth count with the one that was originally in the transfer case. I guess he figures he asks enough times many things will change and he can used the mismatched gears.:meh:

Just trying to understand what I have and what I need to make the rig work.
I have bought two transfer cases now ant they are the same.the manual for theoverdrive says it is for a 31 tooth over drive. the overdrive is a 31 tooth unit, i just want to find the right transfer case case for it to work. I get that the 3speed transfer cases have a narrower gear on on the idler the two I have are 1.25 wide.the vendor is saying that I have the right overdrive unit for my rig. Just trying to sort out what I have and what i Need to do.

Thanks for the pictures I do have the wider overdrive unit, it looks. the input gear on the overdrive unit is 1" thick.that means it is a newer model?
with 31teeth, right so I must find the transfer case i need is a newer one, right?
how do i know if I have the right transfer case if it is not in the gear count?

The later (4/75+) transfer case will have wider gears that match the overdrive. The reason the 31 tooth overdrive is wider was to match the wider gears Toyota used starting 4/75. Besides being wider the count changed on the gears which is why you need to match widths. Buy another transfer case just make sure your widths matches and you should be fine.

Thanks for a good direction

I got all the right stuff now new transfer case with the 31 tooth gear.
i have tried to find the c-clip for the over drive hunting and pecking, anyone got a number for the retainer clip for the 31 tooth Fairey over drive. Also does anyone ether have the install tool they would part with or has a drawing with sizes to build one. I have one that i have built one and have not tried it yet just checking.

would you have a number for the retainer clip for the overdrive and where i could get the install tool?

The difference in the transfer case are clear on the outside of the front output shaft, from what i can see also it seems that the older cruisers, had a 10 tooth flange on the out put, where the new ones have 27.

This may not have anything to do with the Fairley OD but I have a Berans-Hone-Drive that is still functioning well after 47 years. Here is a manual that has some info for those interested, see attached.
