I think it has to do more with the design of the portion of the shaft that protrudes past the rear t-case input shaft bearing on the AA spud shaft versus the stock toyota output shaft. No AA shafts matched up wiht this design. in fact most of their shafts are an inch or two shorter than the factory ones, which typically have a spacer on the rearward side of the bearing in the back of the t-case.

What about the Marlin Toyboxoutput shaft?
Or is that made by AA as well?

That's basically it. Most AA tailshafts barely clear the rear support bearing in the transfer case housing, then reduce size directly to the tailshaft locknut and washer. No extra spacing where stock spacer sleeves were used. Couple of other nuances on the 3 speed as well.

What's involved in installing a Fairey O/D in a four speed with an OEM pto winch?
Would I have to replace the OEM pto drive gear or just take off the conical cover, remove the bearing and fit the O/D to the back of the T/C?
Thanks
Peter

The PTO gear plus the drive gear are replaced with the Install of a Fairey overdrive. The three speed overdrives came with the PTO gear just like the three speed transfer case did. The four speed overdrives had a spacer just the same as the four speed transfers. The differenence is the PTO gear in a three speed Fairey overdrive will work in the four speed overdrives. Mark (65swb45) I believe still has some of the Fairey overdrive PTO gears for sale. If you can find the three speed drive gear for a Fairey overdrive you can use it to mount a three speed transfer to a four speed transmission.

I've got a Fairey overdrive unit. Just needs an Idler gear shaft. Someone could probably get one made at a good machine shop. Make an offer if you're interested.

So what year is it from three speed or four plus how much? Is the idler gear okay? Why make a shaft when you can get them new? How about some pictures? Any rust?

Fairey Overdrive

I have a new unused Fairey overdrive unit that the instruction say it is for a 3 speed transmission and 29 teeth on the transfer input gear. I have a 72 FJ40 with 3 speed. Does the 72 have a 29 tooth input gear and is it worth the trouble to install it?

Ok on the same note. I recently picked up a 73 FJ55 that has a Fairey (I think) OD.
The 55 is a 1f 3spd.
I was hoping it would be an easy sway to put the OD into my 69 40...reading here makes me think I may just leave it in the 55.

Does anyone have the manual in PDF??? Nevermind found one http://toymoco.com/docs/overdrive.pdf

I also need the fairey overdrive manual. If by pm, you mean start a "conversation", I did send you a message with my email. Thanks.

Mark what was the difference between 29 and 31 tooth transfer cases my overdrive unit is for a thirty one tooth
Was one built overt seas?
I know that I need to modify the fuel tank for my 79 it was built in May
Do I need to cut the cross brace under the transmission as well

All Fairey overdrives were built in England. Difference is production date. 4/75 Toyota changed the gearing in the transfer case. Have you ever compared the thickness of the overdrive gear to the one it mated to on the idler gear in the transfer case?

yes

the thickness is different but the problem is the different teeth and pitch?
don't know if one was built overseas or not, i bought a transfer case that is the same as mine, so it won't work. trying to figure it out.
