This may not have anything to do with the Fairley OD but I have a Berans-Hone-Drive that is still functioning well after 47 years. Here is a manual that has some info for those interested, see attached.
Thanks! good information won't help me much with mine. your's seems to be a better design than mine.

Does anyone know where I can find the installing tool for the Fairey overdrive, or the dimensions to build one?
and does anyone have a part number for the retainer cilp?

Not sure what retaining clip.your referring to? There are a few C clips used in the overdrive. Since Fairey is no longer around even with a part number there is no where to order one from. As for the install tool the opening uses a 1/2" drive to tighten a tapered punch a little smaller would be a good start. Find one that folds the special lock without destroying it.

thanks the retaining clip is the big one on the main input gear and the tool for that it is a two piece one one holds the clip in place then you slide od unit in the transfer case then slide the outer part of the tool in and push the clip on the shaft and hold the gear in place.

Found the clip at fasten all
Time to start putting it together

Wanna share their PN for posterity?

FWIW, the install tools are overrated. I have them. But the last three units I installed with snap ring pliers.

I built an installing tool using 2" IDx2"od exhaust fitting
Then 2.25 od exhaust fitting for the slide
Lots of grinding
I'm going to try using a lathe to see if I can make it better
Mine should work but it's really backward

The fastenal clip is the M54
Part number 11506617

When you used the the snap ring pliers are you footing the od unit out the back just a bit to get the ring on and then tightening the od unit up to the transfer case?
I was just test fitting it that seems to work?

Yes.

On my fj40 1979
Will I have to cut the crossmember under the transmission to fit everything back in?
I saw a neat setup in speedway motors to build one if I need to?

I see the link with instructions is for the three speed. The instructions I have are for the four speed and on the cover is says on the FJ40 thru 78 model and FJ55 thru 80 model. Not sure if it's the crossmember or the fuel tank that's has clearance issues.

Does anyone have a picture of the install tool. I've used the a 90 degree snap ring pliers. Only special tool that came with my parts was the punch.

This is my installing tool made from exhaust flanges

Hey guys, I am going thru the Fairey manual posted here by others. I just picked up a '75 with the Fairey OD and I LOVE the feel of the thing. However, it seems to have a pretty good leak at the unit. If there are any easy fixes, I'd love to hear about it. Otherwise, I'll just start tearing in to it and try to make the seals or whatever it needs. There is definitely more whine and hum than my 76's tranny. i also replied to a classifieds add from 2009 before I realized I was in the wrong forum....

Thanks in advance!!!
