Hello All,

I have been enjoying your excellent site. I am in the process of buying two BJ40s here in Ireland. One has fairly good body, not alot of rust but very poor underneath. The other has desperate body but good underneath. Have not yet committed. Maybe too rusty.

The person who is selling has another crashed LC that has a factory winch. Is it straight-forward to install the factory winch on one of the LCs I am thinking about buying? From first look, the connections around the winch itself look alright. My concern is at the transfer case. Is there a plate that can be removed and the factory winch bolted on? Or is it more complicated? Any info is greatly appreciated.

I know that I would have to cut a hole in the floor to get to the winch lever. Anything else to look out for? Apologies if this has been already addressed. Had a quick gander at the search but I did not see an answer to my question.

This may be a dirty other question, but how much rust is too much? Or am I opening up a can of worms?

Many thanks,
Michael

Sorry, had a look at the FAQ and there is some good info in there relating to this. It's always the last place you look!

One follow-on question: would I have to drill and tap the mounting points on the transfer case? Or could I take to transfer case cover along along with the winch?

Thanks,
Michael

you have only to cut a hole for the lever , that's all.
simply bolt on the PTO box on the transfer case and install axle, and winch...that's finish !, for information there is 3 PTO box style :)
so choose the good one :)

nice to meet an ireland man with a landcruiser, very rare, could be interesting to meet you one day in a trip to ireland :)

take care !

make sure the transfer cases are the same (three speed to three speed, or 4 to 4) and be sure to grab the input gear on the one that has the winch on it.

You should not have to drill and tap anything, it was an factory option, so it should bolt on if the trucks are around the same age.

good luck with it.

Rabid, thank you.

Dunkane, merci beaucoup. I have recently joined the serie4.fr web-site. My French is far from fluent, have only had a look at the Internation section. How available are parts for BJ40s in France? Particularly panels. Thanks again.
You are very welcome to come to Ireland. However, it may be some time before I have a 40 that is running. :frown:

Hello themfc,
I recently installed a FACTORY PTO winch on my 1981 BJ40.
There is a plate roughly 3.5" by 8" on left of the trasfer case.
6 screws holding it. Removed them and the PTO gear box should
drop right in. Understand that there are 2 models which could
be identified by the screw location, the older one, the 2 screw on
each length wise is NOT parallel.

Note that there are PTO gear boxes for 3 speed and 4 speed for
the diesel engines, some with dual direction ( NO need to put on
reverse gear for cables releasing) and some with built in gear for
rear vehicle winch.

The front factory cable/winch system should drop right into the
front chasis and bumpers....

Below are shots of what I had....

is that a lockout on the PTO lever? If so, is it stock- what year? MIne is just a stock lever that I contantly fear I will kick. I bungee it to the heater to keep it from being accidentally engaged.

forgot about that thread. Thanks! I copied the last pic.

I dig the idea of it incorporated into the actual shifter, but a hinge lockout is a whole lot better than my bungee.

Hello Rabid,
YES is a lockout lever. This prevent accidental engaging of the PTO.

You need to depress the top with the thumb and the side with
index finger before able to slide forward for "winching" and and
backwards for "unwinching". Both directions, turning speed is
controlled by the gear you engnage with and amount of acceleration.

Hello Themfc,
The 1st pic on previous reply is the cover to the side of transfer case.
The image below is after installing the PTO gear/housing....

Dunkane- My first wife was from Charleville- Mezieres. Her father's best friend had an BJ40 soft top. Must have been a 1975 or so model. Must be a few hidden up in the Ardennes. Bon chance. Ned
