I use to have an 80 series with Factory lockers and was told that they also had different axles etc.

Is this the same with the cable lockers ? or are they they same diff just with a locking centre in them ?

Any pics or info on them would be great

Only the front diff on an 80-series is "different"; the 80 series rear, as well as all 70, 60, and 40 thirds are interchangable. There are some differences among 40-series thirds in spline count, however.

Of course, you need a different axle shaft on one side for any OEM locking differential.

The 70 series from 1990 use an 8" high pinion diff. With that change, things went to the electric locker.

The cable locker center section, afaik, is the same for the production run.

Ok cheers guys but just to confirm there will be one long splined axle in there apart from that stock birfields etc so.

The car is a 1988 Model BJ 74

Yes, one of the axle shafts will have a long spline as the collar for the locking mechanism rides on the shaft.

only in the rear,
the small front uses the normal inner shaft, no long spline shaft required.

Are you talking about 80-series fronts? I thought you needed a long spline inner axle up front for the 60/70 series cable lockers?

note: small front diff stated in the post. i.e. elec locker, same for 80 and 70, post 1990 pre 2000. no long spline needed.
cable lockers are pre 1990 only and large diff only and need long spline for travel.
same for large rear diff e/locker, need long spline shaft for travel.
large e/lockers will fit front or rear FF Land Cruiser large diffs post 1969 to pre 2000 with long spline shafts.
