Hi from New Zealand, Team,
I have a 1993 KZJ78 Prado with a Factory rear diff lock.
I found a document on this forum a while ago that read something like:
'The locker ECU comes with two built-in safeties.
One safety requires you to be traveling below 5mph for the locker to engage (once engaged, there is no speed limit).
The second safety requires you to be in 4LO.
To disable the 4LO safety, you have to cut the '4WD' line, which is pin #8 (blue/red) on the ECU, and ground it (the tail from the plug).
The locker will now work in 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO.
To disable the 5mph safety, you do the same thing, but with the 'SPD' line, which is pin #10 (green/orange).'
I found what I think is the wire to pin #8 to the Diff Lock (4WD) ECU and cut it.
I earthed (grounded) the end of the wire going TO the 4WD ECU and tested. The Diff Lock would engage in all modes. 4WD High, 2WD (High) and 4WD Low (as original), Great, I thought, job done! BUT....
The Diff Lock would not disengage until I re-connected both ends of the wire.
Upon re-reading the information above I saw that the end of the wire still attached to the plug should be grounded (not the other end?). I tried this, but the Diff Lock wouldn't engage in any mode including the original 4WD Low.
This is a pic of the wire I cut and earthed:
All I can think at this stage is the wire I've cut is not the 4WD Wire. The Wiring information I've been able to find are for other 70 series models and other Prados. The KZJ78 was only sold in Japan so I presume the manuals will be rare and in Japanese.
If anyone can throw any ideas on where I've gone wrong, I'd be most grateful.
Hopefully I can in turn, return some other info on the KZJ78
