I’m tying to source parts for my 1974 F.5 and am confused on the differences between F variations. Specifically trying to find pistons, bearings, cam, valves, springs….
What in the F line up can cross over? Is the F.5 compatible with 2F parts?
I searched on mud and didn’t find anything, so sorry if there are threads that cover this.

Need to find at least one online source that sells OEM parts for your cruiser. I mainly use Amayama Trading. Need to figure out how navigate around to find where all the parts are. But once you do it's fairly easy to find out what will work. While NLA I show 1/72-1/75 general market using the same pistons. Not sure what the difference is from earlier pistons but doesn't list these as a sub for early engines. So I assume early wouldn't work later to be safe. 2F has larger displacement and would use a different piston. Part number backs that theory.

Toyota Parts Deal is my go-to for comparing parts for different years. I register and then I enter all the years of FJ40s in my “Vehicle List” where they’ll be saved. Then I look up parts for my 74 then “Change Vehicle” to different years and it will tell you if it fits or not. It’s a fairly quick cross reference so to speak.

Unfortunately there are parts for our F.5s that are no longer available in oem or aftermarket. Pistons being the biggest disappointment. I’ve often wondered if a group buy on custom made domed pistons might have interest here on Mud.

I also use Rock Auto for referencing after market parts comparing part numbers for various years.

Maybe a dumb question but why can’t you bore a 74 block to use 2F pistons with the f.5 connecting rods? I have a 9/74 I’m building and hoping I can salvage the engine without a full rebuild.

Are these domed pistons?

You have the F.5. Here is my May 74 F.5 block & head numbers.

Someone has to have a matrix of engine parts worked up (that should be a sticky). There's a shop in CA that advertises rebuilt F series engines; the name escapes me at the moment.

I’ve wondered that also but I think I’ve heard it stated that there just isn’t enough cylinder wall meat there and boring it out that much would get dangerously close to the water jacket. It probably could be done with sleeving and some mods to the water jacket but I’m guessing it would be big bucks. The largest piston that used to be available for the F or F.5 was 1mm oversize. The 2F is 4mm larger.

Upgrading to a 2F would probably be a more practical solution. But if you’re attached to your F.5 then custom ordered pistons might be an option. No idea what that would cost.

Try to save those pistons if you can - they're gold!

Aftermarket ITM used to carry the pistons … You will need to search part number RY6062 for standard … RY6062020 for 20 over …RY6062030 for 30 over … RY6062040 for the 40 over
It's been years ago since I've seen any of those in stock. When I did, I passed on getting any as I didn't know what size I might need when the time comes along. I wish now that I had bought a set of each.

Thanks for the details and part #’s. I’ve been searching for awhile and haven’t come up with anything close. I’m looking for the 30 over. I also put an add in the classifieds with no luck. May be looking into a 2F soon.

Not sure the status on 1/75-7/80 2F pistons. Those may be in the NLA category or close to it. Most these 40s are over forty years old. I have a couple that are over sixty years old. Toyota's Heritage program doesn't seem like it's going to produce what it takes too keep our 40s on the road with a original parts. Add in many aren't even sold here, only in Japan. I am wondering the wisdom in spending the money for Holley fuel injection versus just going a LS motor. Internal parts seem to be drying up quickly. I'm probably okay because of few miles a year driven, my age and parts hoard.

Clegg sells an engine kit that uses ITM pistons. I’m not sure if they are the right pistons but shows fitment up to 1975.
