I'm beginning to plan my FJ45 "Restomod" - and one of the things I would really like to address is the ergonomics... It could really use a bit more leg room and a more comfortable seat... and a more comfortable seat is going to result in less legroom.

So... I'm thinking when I re-paint the body, it would be a good time to add some length to the cabin.

I've got a good idea in my head of how and where I want to stretch it, but wanted to see what others have done already and how that looks.

I'm thinking a stretch of about 6-8 inches or so... Not major, not looking to make it into a "Supercab" truck.

Please post up pictures of extended cab pickups - and note how much the stretch is if you know.

I will probably extend the wheelbase and leave the bed unmodified.

Thanks :)

Some photoshop ideas...

for your reference

I like the hard top better, but if this helps, here is the most expensive truck in the known world...

I know those trucks well :)

Funny the stretch behind the doors looks good with the soft top, but I still think looks strange with the hard top.

I met Jonathan Ward at the Sema Show and oh my god... if you guys think those trucks look good on the internet, wait until you see one in person. It is just an incredible level of perfection. So good I made the trip to Van Nuys to see TLC / Icon after.

They sure aren't cheap but they are definitely worth it.

The "Restomod" plan actually involves using an Icon4x4 FJ45 rolling chassis, but I'm going to keep the original body. I like the hard top and the traditional bed.

I'm also expecting the rolling chassis to not be cheap either... but it has my entire wish-list and just buying the components (axles, transmissions, suspension, steering etc would all add up anyway) and doing it this way solves a lot of the engineering issues. While it might take a bit of saving get it done, I'm sure it would take about 3-5 years of fabrication / waiting for parts to accomplish the same thing myself with the resources that we have over here... using the Icon rolling chassis will shave years off my build time I am certain.

And then I can focus on saving for an Icon FJ44 to go with it. :steer:

Jonathan has done an incredible job and I'm confident I couldn't do it better myself. The pictures will never do it justice, you have to see it in person. :)

And how bloody sexy is it?! If I had a spare quarter million or so....:hhmm:

Josh

If we're talking fractions, It's more like 5/32 of a Million :)

It is a modified FJ 40 but fits my purpose.

I do not have 1/4 of million in it or even 5/32 of a million. :D

Nothing to do with this thread, but that picture is epic!

New desktop pic! :)

With either of your options, how do you plan on dealing with the fuel filler neck and fuel tank? I see your starting point is a 1982, so the fuel tank is under the cab.

I am planning on using an Icon rolling chassis - basically complete to the point that you could strap a lawn chair on it and drive it... so the fuel tank will be way out the back.

I'll need to see if I can safely run the fuel line from the back of the cab all the way to the rear, or if I need to install new filler cap in the bed sides like the newer 70 series pickups have.

If I do that, the front one will either be for a secondary sub-tank or a custom water tank for a fresh water shower. :)

With a little ingenuity you could heat the water and have a hot water tank.:hhmm:

LOL, in this part of the world I'd be more interested in finding a way to cool it :)

But yeah - a simple heat exchanger plummed in to the engine cooling system and some taps to control flow through it vs bypassing it, and you've got a temperature control too :)

Kurt Grasso' s FJ45 ext cab

Some of my favorites.

I cannot seem to find the picture of the white one with the Wolf alarm system.

Dan, The white on in post #12 is the same one as the one with the "wolf" alram. He has two different sets of tires for it. sbc 350, factory 4spd, fairy overdrive, stock case, limited slips front and rear. He built a blue one first if you have ever seen that one.(it was in an old Toyota trails) Some guy offered him a boatload of money for it. He sold it and then built the white one. I saw it my first year at GSMTR, he came in and camped right next to me. We did not have to worry about bears in the campsite with that wolf there, that thing was HUGE! The 45 was not small either.

Kurt used to live up here in Va but now I believe has moved to Georgia. He has a airplane buisness, buys sells, repairs. He had a airfield up here and a great shop with all the machines to make his own parts ect. I think he dabbles in old Jaguars as well. I have a few pics of the white one buried some where I will see if I can dig them out.

still tempted to build one of these myself...
