Looking for an economical way to create a cover for the Land Cruiser that looks decent, as well. Anybody had sun sails installed? I'm looking for someone to install a couple.

Thanks

I don't have any practical experience as I don't own one. They seem to hold up well on the schools and buildings I look at but one thing to recognize when buying, the fabric has a lifetime guarantee, the seams and sewing do not. IIRC that only has a year or so warranty.

You will need to get the posts engineered as there is quite a bit of wind load and uplift on these, you wont want it coming back down on your vehicle. Lastly it would more than likely require a permit from the jurisdiction you live in. There are set backs from the property line you will need to meet that vary depending on location. You don't want to put it up and then be ordered to remove it afterwards.... Check with your planning department first and then building department. IMPORTANT, remember to get the names and dates of the people you spoke with!

I have installed two sun sails over my pool and I love them. These sun sails are very durable and very economical (purchased from Costco); but, one of the three (3) ropes will invariable break with the monsoons, rain and sun. Meaning, there will always be one rope that has more tension and needs replacing every two (2) years. I have mine connected to my roof as well as my two fences.

My sister had hers professionally done (post cemented into ground) over her bbq and it's a very, very big industrial one. She paid around $400 to have it installed (don't know the cost of the posts, cement, parasol or other materials). She loves it.

I recommend you hook at least one end to a roof and pay someone to put up two posts.

I'll send pic's later today.

Great guys, thanks for the feedback....@zona, I would like to see those pics. Also, could you ask your sister if she can recall who installed hers? I will also check code as it will be close to property line. Thanks again, appreciate it.

My apologies on this taking so long. The first pics were installed by a handyman, I don't have a name but from what I understand anyone can do it. The pic's above the pool is my handywork and the sails are from Home Depot. I've had them for two years and the only thing I've had to do is replace the nylon rope on a couple small sections, no biggie.

The sails are great, I love the shade they provide in the backyard, I don't know about using them for a front yard, if it rains will it really help? Also, you have to angle and position according to the summer sun.

I've researched this but have yet to proceed. Check here:http://www.coolaroousa.com/
They have good technical information on proper posts, mounting hardware and even how deep to dig the holes and how much cement to use. I do remember they recommend turnbuckles to adjust tension.

They do recommend against mounting them to the house. If I were to do so, I would reinforce the eaves and/ or add a spring or some stretch cord to the mount to reduce the stress on the structure.

Share your results, I plan on doing this someday and would like to see other's applications.

Cool guys, thanks....I may look at knocking this out myself...I think I have two good mounting points, it will be finding the third that may be the challenge.
