update for me: still haven't finished the truck, but that's not a big deal i don't think. i think it will be finished in time. BUT, still wondering about gas prices, and, i am going to be making an offer on a home in two weeks, so, that might put a big dent in my funds. A lot going on right now, but i still would like to make this trip if possible.

I am still hoping to make this. The way I'm looking at it is that gas isn't going to go down, the land isn't always going to be available and if I don't do it now I don't know when I will. I'm budgeting about $1500 in gas alone and will try to camp as much as possible. We may not make it for the first day though... planning on going through Yellowstone on the way.

Good luck with the house Alex.

you have no idea Eric, we were probably one of the last groups to enjoy those mountains down south that last trip.

Sad but true. :crybaby: After the forest service told us there was no way they could or would close it all down because of so many access points.... they turn around and tank trap and gate every one of them!

Glad we got to share the area before it was taken from us. :censor:

After my issues with the heart, I decided I was given another chance and that I should take advantage of it. Life's short and you can always find an excuse until it is too late. You could die tomorrow crossing the street.

Although we are not in on this trip being organized by Rick for logistics reasons, we are heading out West in late April through mid-May. We plan to visit Moab, Yellowstone and the Grand canyon, etc. We've never been there except flying over it and are not going to worry about an extra buck a gallon on a 300-400 gallon trip. We could take the Saab convertible and get 28-30 mpg, but the FJC will be the ride of choice at 2/3 that mpg and let us do some exploring off the beaten track.

This is our number one right now on the bucket list. If you are having second thoughts - just do it

this is killing me. I want to go, i really really want to go, i'm afraid i'm overcommitting myself. The 80 still isn't broken in (waiting on a new radiator), i have a house under contract to buy, i'm going to jamaica in October, Outter Banks trip in August with the family...... Can i leave this as a "dot, dot, dot"?

my only advice Alex is if you end up going and then find out that it indeed over extends you, you need to have taken a bunch of pictures so when you start thinking how you shouldn't have gone you can pull them out and remind yourself why you did.
