Hi Hardcorers,
I usually lurk in the 70's section but I've got some questions about exo cages that I am hoping some of you might be able to answer.
I have a plan: My plan is to mount a roof rack - The ExoRack
The BJ74 has an frp top which isn't built for carrying heavy loads on the gutters. My plan is to built an ExoRack to carry a
roof top tent and spare tyre. The gutters on the frp are not going to be up to the task when off road. Here are some pics so
you know what I'm getting at.
The rig and where I want to tie the ExoRack to the chassis.
Close up of tie points:
Front, between spring perch and body mount.
Rear mount, bolt to the chassis with the rear bar mounts.
Just behind the body mount.
Here is an impression of the finished product. Sorry not to good with photoshop
The questions I have are:
Is it ok to bolt (preferred option) or weld to the chassis?
Are four mounts enough for a rigid rack or is it going to wobble all over the place?
The ExoRack will not touch the body and I want to keep it about 2 inches from the body. Is this enough so the ExoRack
wont hit the body when the rig flexes on the trails? The body has a 1 inch lift on poly blocks which might reduce a bit
of body on chassis movement.
What size tube? Remember its not a true exo cage. Its just there to support the rack and 200kgs. 1.5 inch OD pipe with
2mm wall thickness?
If you can answer any of these questions or have pics of a build like I am attempting that would be great.
I am not going to weld it but a mate who is a pro welder and builds hot rods from the chassis up is gonna
do it. I just need some idea that what I'm asking him to do is gonna work.
Cheers guys
Boogie.
