What is everyone doing for exhausts? I just priced out The factory parts, and it’s stupid high mostly because of the tail section.

Find a good muffler shop. Look for one with hot rods and muscle cars hanging around. A shop like that can make up just about anything you want.

For the most part those guys like to work on cool challenges more than Civics and Corollas.

I had a hot rod kind of guy do mine. It is tucked up and out of the way.
It is all welded to make one piece and that was a problem when clutch was replaced.

Really?

I got the front pipe from the drop to the muffler for under $150. Shipping wasn’t to bad. The rest shows NLA for me.

On the PZJ70 I am just taking it to the local hot rod muffler shop to do it from the front pipe to the back back.

Cheers

I replaced the front pipe with silencer back in Okinawa, it and the gasket were cheap. The mid pipe was reasonable at $80 plus shipping. New hardware and gaskets for all the sections was reasonable. The killer was the tail pipe. $400 plus shipping from japan. stupid price.

Just called up a shop, made an appointment for next week. Any recommendations for sizing? I don't know enough about NA diesel performance to speak intelligently, so i'll just ask the questions now.

In a NA diesel application, how does back pressure effect engine performance?

I got a project or two coming up that will get very nice bling exhaust.

I don’t think it is needed on an N/A motor. Certainly not putting anything fancy on the 1PZ.

Cheers

You need back pressure with a turbo not without.

Straight pipe is the best but loud. I ran straight pipe on a Nissan Diesel for years and it was not something I would want on a DD or family hauler. So a nice free flow muffler will be all it needs.

I would go 2.5”, definitely nothing bigger than 2.75” and I don’t see any benifit to that even. Turboing is when playing with exhaust nets results. An N/A not so much.

Cheers

Factory is about 2.5 I believe, just guessing with my fingers. Thank you for confirming my thoughts as far as diameter. I'm certainly not looking for anything loud. My young man days are behind me.

Even with a turbo you may want something. My BJ74 was straight-piped and it was irritating. I added a resonator. If you are set on a straight pipe I suggest you have them route it in a manner where they could easily cut out a section to fit a muffler or resonator without having to start all over.

I used one of these. I had a pair kicking around the garage from when I was playing with exhaust on my Challenger.

I’m not down for straight pipes. I secretly have a goal to make my truck as quite inside as my wife’s E-class (she has load bars so it might be attainable).

OK - so admittedly, I am no diesel expert and, in fact, this is my first diesel vehicle EVER. But everything that I read about back pressure told me that it isn’t a concern - that having a turbo would provide any of the back pressure that you would need. And, in fact, the more free-flowing you could build your exhaust, the better. Intuitively, this does make the most sense to me.
With my arm chair knowledge in hand, I went ahead and had the 3” down pipe and 3” exhaust (magnaflow muffler) installed in my Prado and have been very happy with the results

From my petrol race car background, in NA applications a certain level of backpressure is desired but with turbo applications backpressure is the enemy. I.e in my b16 all motor I had custom exhaust with equal length headers and toyed with various plumbing. I found that a 2 3/4 with a spoon muffler was the bees knees. But on a d16zc motor with a tial 700 snail, 3” straight pipe dumping behind the front wheel was ideal.

just my .0002 cents ..

3 TDI with straight pipes and loving every minute of it ..

Lower EGT all over, and fastest response .. 2 of them my DD ..

i went to a flowmaster 55, loud enough to enjoy, not as loud as the 44 for sure, i went 2.5 from header back, following factory. Price was reasonable since i knew the guy... when the turbo happens, i would like a similar setup in 3 inch

This was done today. 2.25 piping following the factory. Some random muffler. It has a drone just below 1000rpm under load. Otherwise it’s fine.

I just straight piped my BJ74 today. Let me know if you want an audio clip. It sounds a lot more throaty above 2400rpm but I’m not complaining. It’s not my DD so it’s doable. I think sound deadening the side panels makes it easily tolerable.

Do you guys have photos on how your exhaust is routed? I have a straight pipe in mine that exits right in front of the rear right tire. I would like to put muffler to it to quiet it down. Thank you.

Lets hear it. Did you go to 3" size?
