I'll put my vote on broken rear exhaust hanger.

Well this morning's test drive revealed that the rattle is not all gone but is significantly better. I will take vbcruch's advice and look at the rear exhaust hanger.

I traced a buzz in D on my rig to the rad overflow bottle.

I've had the same rattling symptoms, but when I went under the LC the rattle appeared to be coming from inside the muffler itself. Anyone else found this to be the case?

Yep, exactly what mine is. I guess a baffle in the muffler has broken loose. Worse part is that it started right after I took a wire wheel to the cat covers to shine them up. I guess the vibrations from the drill/wire wheel was the final straw for whatever broke loose in the muffler. Mine only rattles when the a/c pulls the rmps down just a bit, so I usally pop it into N while stoped.

My insulator in the hanger behind the muffler is shot causing a rattle at stops in "D." Look there too!

I just fixed this problem too. It was hitting the cat skid plate on my Hanna slider. I had a bad or broken insulator or muffler mount and a bad one (it was old and warped). I ordered some new ones from CDan and also go some washers and put though in too. No more rattle. I had to lay in the rocks to do it but it got done.

Thanks for the impute Sam I check and see if this is causing it too, since I have the same type of slider as you.

Hello,

I found that my rattle was coming from the radio's box inside the dash board! I took the glove box out and behind the passenger-side speaker the tin can metal factory amp box was hitting on another box causing a terrible rattling noise... I used a piece of thin foam wedged between the two to stop the vibration... its worked great.

I have had mine off for a couple years now and no problems. Unlike a 97, the 96 head sheild cannot be purchased seperately from the front pipe. $25 v. $1200.00!!

Aren't these parts identical on the '96 and '97 (and '95, for that matter?)

I'd make it work :)

I can tell you from personal experience that the LC, even when brand new, had a subtle rattle while idling in D. I suspect that anyone who has had theirs since new (Cruiserdan I know has) can tell you the same thing. I have never isolated the rattle, and just put it in N when it bothers me.

So, while there are any number of contributing factors that have made it worse over time, don't think that something is "wrong" with your cruiser. I have had mine since mile 17, so I say learn to live with it.

Coins in the ashtray will rattle too. Just put more coins in or get them out.

Regards

Alvaro

Same issue. Got the same impression Otis22 did, the sound was coming from the muffler itself. Only at norm op temp, not at start, only when standing. Not coming from the cats. Mounts are solid. I will keep looking.

How much are replacement Toyota mufflers? Looks like it is a fairly easy pull, an O2 sensor, and a few bolts. Anyone replace one of these yet?

mine rattles too, I jam my foot under the slee rear bumper and wedge downward with my foot on the pipe. This pushes things down a bit so it doesn't rattle on the heat shields all the way back :)

I have 96 with a similar noise and I have actually tracked it down to the air intake tube that comes from inside the pass front fender. Set the parking brake, put the truck in drive and hold on the plastic intake tube as it leaves the front fender. I basically wedged a piece of rubber in between the bottom of the tube and the fender. The noise was loud and sounded like a loose exhaust component because it was echoing through the fender. Good Luck!

replacement muffler is $185 from a company named bosal. factory is $350. the bosal is a direct bolt in with o2 sensor mount and hangers. do buy new rubber cushions as the studs usually break when you try to remove them. the cushions are 15 bucks a piece

Clearly the only effective fix for this is a snorkel :)

I'll have to check that one out as I've eliminated all the other rattles.
(heat shields and radiator overflow bottle)

Thanks for the tip. :D

Just tracked my "rattle in D" issue to this same area. A small amount of pressure applied to this intake tube and the rattle disappears. Really annoying since it echoes through the fender and from inside the truck it sounds like there is something loose in the front passenger door.

Wonder if there is a loose connection in there or if the best fix is just to wedge something against that intake tube so it doesn't rattle anymore...

Investigated some more and it was a missing nut holding the intake tubing that was inside the passenger fender. Looking closely at the inside of the fender just forward from where the intake tube enters the fender revealed that a nut that had been there was missing. Ring of dirt around a hole and no nut...

So I pulled the air filter assembly out and then repositioned the intake tube in side the fender so the threaded stud stuck back out the hole. Another nut and some locktite and no more rattle :)

I wonder how many other 80's are missing this nut too...

Mine had come loose at several points, but the rattle was actually coming from the section of pipe that goes over the frame rail. It was touching the frame and rattling.
