A kid on a cell phone smashed into the rear of my Land Cruiser. The muffler is bent and it presents an opportunity to replace it if I desire. My question, is there a performance reason to replace with something other than the OEM part? Is it purely for the sound? Will it effect the ability to smog the ride in the future? If you recommend another part, which one do you recommend?

Thanks

most of what I have read for the after market exhaust would be mainly for sound. If ya do any wheelin at all I would take the cash and have a custom exhaust designed for the rear area to tuck it up in a bit, that's a weak spot when offroad...

Delete the resonator and have an exhaust shop weld up a ss pipe in place of the resonator. As @kreiten said ask them to tuck it up a bit. I noted no difference in sound, that's my perception, others may say differently.
I'd cut just behind the resonator. Leaving the factory exhaust hanger. Good luck with that

When I get my rear bumper, I'll be doing a similar resonator removal... But what does "ss" stand for in "ss pipe?"

The shop near me said they'd charge about $40 bucks to tuck it in without the resonator. Cheap mod!

The muffler is more center, between the axles. The rear piece that was likely bent in your collision is the aforementioned resonator. It's designed to reduce exhaust noise. I deleted mine and tucked a new ss pipe about 30k ago.

I haven't read of anyone here doing a Magnaflow or Flowmaster replacement muffler, but both are popular on Tundra V8s and other Toy platforms.

Mine had a Flowmaster on it when I purchased it. The factory resonator was still in place as well. It sounded ok. I could always hear my wife coming up the street. But, if you were inside the cab, it sounded like sh!t. Major drone, even worse if you were in the second or third row seats. You'd get a headache in 30 minutes because it was so annoying. I switched it back to a factory muffler with the one I had pulled off my Tundra.
