Exhaust Manifold - Flat & Installed

Rover - Thx for the tip... Spitfire did a nice job on the manifolds.

I ended up using one Toyota Gasket, and a couple of half washers as shims for the different height of the bolt faces between the intake and exhaust manifolds...

Then I replaced the studs in the upper center area with two bolts. It made it very easy to re-install. I didn't even remove the down tube, it just sat in clean.

Torque-ing the bolt closest to the firewall is an exercise in patience... I used Loctite blue on all the bolts, so I'm hoping that they will stay put for at least another 50k miles.

Thanks to all for your guidance, suggestions and support.

How did you get the upper studs out so that you could replace with bolts? I've never taken them out and I don't want to goon mine up trying but I could see how it would be much easier to put back in like you did.

To remove the studs, put 2 nuts on the stud, locking them against each otther. Turn the inner nut in the loosening direction to remove the stud.
Mine wouldn't budge so I just left them, wasn't that bad. I loosened the exhaust pretty far back so i could manipulate it IOT make the insert easier. Job is done, truck sounds much better, I must have had a massive exhaust leak because the sound of the engine is like new and the power had to have increased by a ton, can feel it driving. Thanks to ih8mud! love this site. Next project is the steering knuckles this summer. Going to make my 13 year old help on what looks to be a real mess.

just got my 60 back from getting the manifold gasket replaced

I was not in the mood to tackle it but was going to...when I met the father son team that have a shop a few minutes from me it made the choice easy. Now beside me, my rigs have been to really one other shop since 1988, its just getting harder to get over to his place. So.....when the owners 23 year old son told me the way he likes to get old bolts apart I was sold "I like to let them soak for a day in Kroil, go and move just a tiny bit, come back and move a bit more, on and on....."

on the original(untouched) exhaust manifold, 3 of the bolts had backed out over the years, at #5 there was some rust/pitting on the port(assume from water siting on top)

We use a spare set I had(because I cant get new), explained the Mud way was to bolt together and machine, at 1st they were not sure I was right, but the machine shop said Yup....thats the way to do it.

used OEM gasket, pretty much replaced all other gaskets, all the rings in the horns, did not have to(but I had a new one) but replaced the big black insulator thing.

and I am happy....it purrs just like its suppose to again(my 82 Fj40 purrs so it was pissing me off), runs better as well .

cost me $450 for labor and machine shop, $200 or less OEM parts(which I have had for 2 years) Price alone was worth paying to see if I had found a great new mechanic. I checked out 8 or so local shops, some dont work on pre 96, some had attitudes, some I just knew we were not a match, one the guy said no I really don't want to.......then saw my 82 Fj40 and said YES I WANT TO.......I said no...;)

These guys did as I asked(and put up with me) and took great care of me, I gave them time......and did not want cheap or fast.......just good work.

That's a great story.
