Can out of spec valve clearance cause noise? I am getting tapping/groaning noise from the valve cover on my Camry. As the 96 V6 Camry and 80 uses the same valve setup it shouldn't make a difference either way.
To keep it 80 Tech, if my 80 has excessive valve clearance, will it make a tapping noise? On the Camry the noise is only between 1500 and 2500 rpms.
I removed the valve cover and and only one exhaust valve is out of spec .002". .016" vs .010 to .014" for in spec.

I need to check the valves on the 80, its been a while.

If I play the swapping of the valve shims, can I swap out Camry 1MZ-fe shims for 80 1FZ-fe shims and vise versa? Assuming that they are the same size shims.

I could be mistaken, so this post will essentially be meaningless to you...

but I believe I discovered the 1FZ has its own unique set of overpriced shims.

Isn't that the case with most manufacturers? I remember a long time ago looking for shims thinking I could get some kind of generic "kit", but was annoyed to discover it was quite engine specific.

Then again, now that I think about it, that was a Toyota engine as well.

IIRC the 1FZ has hydraulic lifters, so clearance shouldn't be an issue with that engine.

If it was a 3FE, adjust it as best you can and lift with what's left. Those things always sound like sewing machines.

The 1FZ does NOT have hydraulic lifters.
