Did you go with the mud hog?
Yes. I havent used them extensively as others on the board, but IMO, for the money they cannot be beat. They look great on an SOA 40 with stock steelies. You can also get a “warranty” with them if you buy through simple tire, though i have not had to use it.

Those look good! I am picking up my stock widened wheels from the powder coat tomorrow. I will have to see who carries those tires locally.

Just order online from SimpleTire or Walmart.com. You could also check with Rob’s tire sponsor, Korita Tires? I have only found them advertised on Facebook marketplace by some tire shop east of LA a bit, cant recall the exact city they are in. None of the tire shops i spoke to around our shop in Temecula could get them. I beleive the Kanati’s are cheaper because they are esentially a direct to consumer model. No middle man or marketing/advertisement overhead. I recently bought a set of the 40” mud hogs during their black friday sale, and they delivered on a pallet from a Moreno Vally warehouse.

@EWheeler are you running stock springs SOA, shackle reversal or OE up front?

I bought the 40 SOA. As far as i know, stock springs, shackle up front as original with 2.75” CTC shackles, extended shackles in rear 4.25” CTC. No power steering, it steers great when moving with factory large diameter wheel. PS would be nice for parking lot maneuvering…..its a pavement princess.

I got a flat on the way home from work this morning due to some road debris when I pulled onto the shoulder to let some folks pass. Just ordered a replacement from Walmart. Oddly enough, I couldn't find this size on Simple Tire, although I know for sure I've seen them listed there before. Here is the link for the Kanati's, they are $200 even each with tax and free shipping.

Picked up my wheels from powder coat and they look amazing! Now to find what tires I want to run and a new set of hubcaps.

This morning I drained the rear axle due to the diff cover leaking all over the place. I was a bit hasty when I had it apart to install the locker and did not get an adequate seal. The sealant I was using did not have much left in the tube and I tried to stretch it out and make it work (that’s what happens when I forget to pick up a new tube). Self inflicted misery!!

This time I had a fresh tube of gasket maker and made a good seal. I will fill the axle tomorrow, giving the sealant ample time to cure.

Working on 2 builds at the same time sucks. One is a runner and the other is a project. I keep gravitating to the runner because I know I can drive it after every upgrade or add on. But on the other hand, the more I drive it the more motivated I get to finish the project!

A few more parts have come in, Bilstein shocks, brand new factory hubcaps, halogen headlights and harnesses. Waiting for the weather to cooperate so I can install them and be ready for the next club run.

Since it was a really nice day I got after it early this morning. Did not start so good, the rear shocks I bought turned out to be front shocks! Yep, I mixed up the front and rear shock part numbers 🤦🏻‍♂️ Another trip to get the rear shocks tomorrow.

Replaced the stock headlights and installed the Toyota halogen headlights. Very nice kit, halogen semi sealed bulbs, wiring harness, relays and fuses. I did have to replace the terminal ends that hook up to the battery. The battery studs were bigger than the eyelets on the harness. Simple fix, cut, strip, crimp and attach. They work great from I can tell in the sunshine, I will test them tonight.

I have a set of 55 springs I squirreled away years ago. I’m going to take them apart and inspect them. Hopefully no cracks in any of the leaves and I can just clean them up, paint and drill the main spring and order new bushings.

In the meantime I’m going to flip the rear springs to move the wheel back and stretch the wheel base. I need to make bump stops as well.

Number 3 son put on the new wheels/tires/hubcaps trio for me.
He said he wanted to help me out, but truth be told, he was tired of having to work around the stack of tires in the garage 😂

Very happy with the outcome, Sully looks fantastic and is ready to wheel!!!

Now I just need to heal up so I can drive it!

Went to Big Bear on a club outing, weekend before last, I have not wheeled up there in 17 years. The trails have changed quite a bit and it was nice to be out of the city and in the trees. The 40 performed great, but that big ass factory boat wheel sucks! That being said, out with the old and in with the new.

I robbed my project of the steering wheel and installed it on Sully. Picking up a tilt column later today for Sully.

Tim had made seat mounts to relocate them farther back and reclined. I can’t drive with the seats leaned so far back and the wife can not reach the pedals at all!

I’ve had the original seats mounts tucked away in the garage, they are being sent to get blasted and powder coated.

Look forward to having the seats back to the factory location and the convenience and adjustability of the tilt column!!

Picked up the new (to me) tilt column last night. More parts to source and prep work to do before I can install it. I have this donor column to scavenge the pieces that are missing from the new column. Not using the sweet hot rod billet wheel though 😂

Rockcod,

I found this thread intriguing, and went back to the beginning to read the whole thread. One thing that really struck me was the Saginaw power steering installation. It's a pretty common modification, but the way you plumbed the high pressure supply and low pressure return lines really sets your installation apart. I looked for specific information and didn't see it.

Could you please share what the application was for those hoses?

Great project and great thread. Thank you!

I mounted the pump on the passenger side of the engine, the alternator is on the driver side. I made my own mount and purchased the hose and fittings from Hoseman in Santa Fe Springs. They told me they are used on tractors, skid steers etc. so they can make the hoses to their specific needs.
They worked out great.
