For my use, I personally can't afford to buy an American made SUV. Two reasons.... If it's brand new its waaaaayyyy to expensive for the quality it will give me.....If its used, any price is too expensive for the quality it will give me.
.
I'm in agreement with this,,,
And to be fair, American car companies have dramatically improved their quality in the last decade. The problem now is they aren't making what consumers really want. The reason why US car companies have 'lagged' in quality is simply management. Unions, wages and unfair competition are not to blame. There are plenty of videos on the net of Toyota plants and production processes, watch them and compare with what happens at GM and you know all you need to know.
Auto manufacturing isn't perfectly competitive. It takes time and a lot of creative destruction before changes occur..There are plenty of industries in the US where the management is just crap.
Last week , I met an American Airlines Dir of Finance that told me with a straight face, "Southwest Airlines is foolish not to charge baggage fees, that's just leaving money on the table.." If you need an explanation for why AA went bankrupt, there it is.
Frankly, I put US car executives and airline executives in the same boat. They've both relied on a lot of government subsidy and protection to produce a product that don't compete well globally..
