I’m looking at a 97 lx, sellers done lots of work to it to make it look like a aus poverty pack like removing cladding putting the quad headlights scrub bars etc, also done some engine work like new hoses and radiator flush, but the engine is 273k miles, though carfax says it was a fleet vehicle up north, so that could mean regular maintenance, also it has some problems with the paint too, surface rust at bottom of cladding and the paint on the upper and lower rear gates is terrible where seller states a paint shop messed it up.
But back to the main point, if the worst happeneds and it needs a new engine what are the prices for that? And how easy would the swap be? Like start Friday and have it running Monday easy? Love the way the 80 is modded and it’s a triple locker but uneasy with the amount of miles and the fact that I would either ship it home or drive it back.

Land Cruisers are pay-to-play; how thick is your billfold?

Start here:

Not exactly the metrics you asked for, but hope these are helpful. I own a LX 450 which currently is just over 325,000 miles. In 2015 when it had 278,000 on it, it had the engine replaced with a new Toyota motor. The owner supplied this motor along with a transmission to a shop in southwestern Utah. The shop took about 10 days to do the work and charged $1,537 for labor and spent $1443 on parts and fluids. I'm not certain, but I think this is when the headers on it currently were installed and the cats were deleted. YMMV

This is a crazy number! $1500 for 10 days of labor?

You can read up on this subject there are tons of threads on engine replacement cost. A new short block is $4k, rebuilt head from $700-1500 depending on your area. Engine gasket kit $300,
All the other stuff will vary depending on what you want to replace $100-$5000??. If you had a helper and had all your parts lined up you could install in a weekend assuming you already had a new complete long block.

Im going to hazard a guess and say that it wasn't being worked on for ten days straight non stop

I just had this done. New reman engine was $5500. Labor to install was $4500. Another ~$7k replacing just about everything in the engine bay - this was just Genuine Toyota parts cost as they did not charge any labor as it was already part of the $4500. I could have saved about $2k sourcing the parts myself but then they would not have covered any issues with the parts after install.

No hourly rate was listed, but I'm all but certain that the shop did not work on it continuously during the time it was in the shop. Those are simply the dates when it entered the shop and when it was released.

Quite likely, but $1500 is still a number that's no longer real
It was real then, because I have the invoice. Time and inflation have undoubtedly changed things, even in southern Utah where skilled techs seemed to have been hungry for work. I just wish they'd listed the actual hours worked, which would make it possible to do a comparable to current hourly rates.

Currently shops near me are $150-$210 an hour.
@ $100 an hour for 10 days, 8hr's a day = $8000.
Not looking up labor time guide info but its probably 15hr to do a motor swap plus whatever else it needed. $1500 labor if it needed rebuild is not bad. labor rate ($ per hr) is "normally" on the bill somewhere

I've got a screenshot of the motor order and it apparently was new, so no need for a rebuild, just a straight up R&R deal. It's noted there was a 36 month warranty on it, but no pricing. No docs on the trans, but would assume it was at least a rebuild if it wasn't also new.

I think your guess of about 15 hours @ a $100/hour rate is probably close. I'm certain there wasn't 80 hours in it. If like many small shops doing a big job, it wasn't worked on continuously, they worked on it in between oil changes, brake jobs, and other more ordinary work.

FYI, none of these “long blocks” that are “new” are actually that. In particular the EBay ones.

They are remanned (remanufactured) and only parts out of spec are replaced. If within specs parts are reused in the rebuild. They also use the cheapest parts they can buy, IE they don’t use OEM Toyota parts.

Cheers

What’s your shop time for a motor swap just take out transfer parts and put back? Get it all buttoned up and running. Shops in Oregon are roughly $4500-$7500 for a 1fzfe swap. Not looking for price just how many hours roughly you think it would take. Obviously there are levels to this and could be discussed till the end of time what to replace where to cut corners blah blah blah. I guesstimate 24-30 hours for a cruiser shop for a rushed job not being meticulous about replacing lots of stuff.

@Cruisers and Co how many hours to swap an engine do you think? You have done a couple in
The last months.

We don’t do them like that, bites us in the arse every time.

Cheers

Not a single one of mine is prescribed as asked by the OP but 30-40ish hours??? If I was really turning and burning... Like my personal 1FZ died a week before cruise Moab or Rubithon and I was bound and determined it needed to go... 2 loooonnnngggg relentless days.... But I also know all of the nuances and would not be fighting it.

My swaps usually take longer than the 30-40 longer as we're installing snails, getting into the valve body, doing tons of cleanup and replacing a ton of stuff.

For instance, this beaut going in tomorrow...

Just another data point on the motor in my LX 450, it was from Autozone, so was some sort of reman. That said it is still running strong, uses no oil and has presented exactly zero engine problems as it nears 10 years since it was installed.
