Is that true even when it involves an intentional drive through water off road?

Yes, his intention was to drive through the water, not stop and ruin his vehicle! We pay for driver's poor decisions all the time. Only time we wouldn't would be IF and only IF we could proove they sank it on purpose (for payoff reasons or such). This claim is very simple, a claim should have been filed on day one. Hopefully there won't be any issues now, there shouldn't be anyway.
Premiums may or may not go up. A Comp claim is normally no fault, but with what happened here, there's a chance his rates would go up with the "at fault" loss. All depends on what insurance company and how they handle things. Unless he has a crazy driving record, I wouldn't expect more than $30 a month increase. Beats the heck out of a $6,000 repair! Hope it all works out.

The intention wasn't my concern, it was the off highway use part. My understanding is that coverage gets grey as you move off forest service roads and onto trails. Hopefully this isn't the case.

Actually I've researched the insurance angle a bit. I have more invested in my FJ40 Cruiser than I do in my 100, it still looks like a pile of scrap but it will climb a wall. However the book value for the FJ40 is zip. I wanted to get custom car insurance, which I can. However it will not cover my truck off road. Anybody spot the catch here? AFAIK standard insurance doesn't care where I drive.

Another thing to be aware of:
If you use AAA they will not cover off highway towing/extraction (that was a $500 lesson:rolleyes:). They also will not cover towing for customized/lifted vehicles. This has never been a problem for the 100 (mild lift) but they denied me a tow for my FJ40. This is very dependent on the driver, some drivers look the other way others will refuse to do it. If you get into a significant lift be aware.

I personally wouldn't hesitate using the Tundra motor. All the rumor mill is anecdotal at best, and not evidence of any real incompatibility. Fact is that they are the same family of motors and likely 99% identical so long as you buy within the same relative years/generation. If they aren't, it will be a minor difference, that you can likely scrounge the part from you current motor for.

Toyota/Lexus will often change suppliers, part numbers, for various batches, that don't cause any real functional change. Don't let these guys scare you to think the tundra has a lessor motor as those trucks likely see harder life cycle use than the typical Hundy. The cast vs forged, is IMO more likely a difference between non-vvti and vvti generations - with newer generations typically more optimized and less overbuilt. All Toyota's have legendary reliability.

If there's any real difference, it would be that from the LX version. Lexus has higher standards and thresholds for part defects than toyota. Doesn't necessarily mean the Lexus version is higher quality, only better QC'd.

Did you know that Black Gold in Nisku sells whole engines from lx470s? Give them a call. That might be your best option.

What about a GX. Did you research that? They are supposed to have the same engine as a cruiser.

I seem to recall that 4runners, gx, cruisers, lx470s are built in Japan whereas the tundra are built in NA. That could be the distinguishing feature for forged versus not. Though I have no supporting info on this - its just a recollection.

I think the issue covering vehicles whole "offloading" will boil down tot the primary use of the vehicle. I personally have never run across a claim being denied for offroad use. Each company is different, but no coverage would apply more for the rock crawlers and non street legal vehicles. He shouldn't have any issues here.

They denied to tow your lifted FJ40? I would think it would be a problem on flat deck.

As far as coverage goes for towing its always good to be on a membership of some sort.
I only paid $77 for a flat deck which had Togo 40kms out of town and then I towed it again the next day which was free
My FJ40 is pretty far from stock. :grinpimp:
