I have 86 4-Runner. I was thinking of changing out the engine R-22 with one that has alot more pep. I would like to tow a small camper gross weight 1500 pds. Is there a Toyota engine with lots more power, and a conversion kit? What Toy engine would you suggest, if the kit is available? The GMC 350 engine is alot more power, but have heard about the very poor gas mileage. Any suggestions? I love my Runner.

4.7 V8 and 4 sp auto from the 100?

Have you done this conversion on your truck? Do you have any idea of the gas mileage I would get? I think the 22R is 2.4 liter, and 4.7 would be substanual differance as far as power for sure.

milage is a contentious issue, but I would expect around the same as a 100 series with 4.7 V8 would get.

I havent done that particular conversion, but several here have to hilux, you could try some of the guys at www.outerlimits4x4.com http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modules/phpBB2/

Who read pirate, and try and copy it in an Aus version, but there are a couple who have done the lexus soarer 4.0 V8 into hilux as well.

You're options are limited by your imagination, really. There are a number of questions you want to ask, though, such as "what do I really want out of this swap?"

If you just want some more "pep" w/ good mileage and keeping your same transmission, your best bet is to swap a 3RZ 2.7 4-cyl from a later tacoma 4x4. It will bolt up to your transmission (assuming 5-speed) and give you 150HP (about 40 more than you have now) and good torque. There is no kit available to do this swap, however, though I know that Marlin Crawler is considering making a kit in the future.

Other options are 3.4 Toyota V6, 4.3 Chevy (i have one in my 86), Ford 5.0, Buick 3.8, Toyota 3.0, etc.

I would look into a 4.3 vortec chevy engine. they are similar in weight, super cheep to buy, and will bolt up using the 350 converion kits. they also eliminate the problems with the front clearance. they also will give you better mileage than your 22r especially while towing. they have great power and run smoothly. they also will not cause the damage you'll get with a 350.

I'll have to take issue with this - having a 4.3 TBI in my xcab, I can speak from experience. Expect mid-teens with a 4.3 TBI.

Now, a TBI is going to run about 160hp and 220(?) lb of torque... and cost between 2500 and 4500 to do right (you will wan tto change trannies to a R series).

Marlin Crawler is working on swap kits for the 3rz 4-cyl. It's a 2.7 that has almost the same HP as the 4.3 Tbi, but less torque. But you will get better mileage.

Again - it depends on what you want and what you want to accomplish.

Dude - I'm thinkin' your 4.3 ain't runnin' right. I've got an Astro-van that does better than that fully loaded. I got it just to do my wifes toy-mini swap... Come to think of it my wifes 'Burb does better than that with a 383 stroker motor. I'll admit it takes some tuning and the right build but...

I have a friend with a GM V-6 in an X-cab that is loving the power...

Last trip I got 17 mpg. That's w/ 4.88's, 35" tires, etc, etc, etc and corrected for teh gears. That's very typical to what I've heard of others getting with 4.3 TBI swaps and better than most people I know who have this engine in vans or trucks.

The truck is running well, with no codes at all. Only thing that isn't "stock" in the engine is the Howell speed sensor delete....
