I have looked in both my Haynes and Toyota FSM and cannot find the torques spec for the engine side cover.

I would assume it would be similar to the oil pan (~7 lb-ft). But I would like to know for certain.

Anyone know for certain?

Oil pan bolts are an 8mm diameter fastener.

Side cover bolts are 6mm.

Timing cover torque spec for 6mm fastener is 53-69 inch-pounds or 4.4-5.75 foot pounds.

I use blue locktite on them so that after you snug them up they stay secure.

Remember that locktite will not work properly in holes that are not clean and free of grease and oil.

Poser,

What do you recommend as a method for cleaning out the holes?

Brake cleaner and compressed air.

Safety glasses are your friend.

Give everything a final wipe down with lacquer thinner and you are ready to install the gasket.

Poser,

Will mineral spirits work in place of lacquer thinner? If not, it is a trip to the hardware store.

Mineral spirits are going to leave an oily residue which will not wipe clean and dry.

If you have a few cans of brake cleaner, get after it with them and save some for a rag and wipe everything down with that.

Poser,

Thanks for answering all my questions. Your wisdom is much appreciated.

No worries.

Don't know if you have seen this in the FAQ but take a look at this in case you have not.

Poser,

Used the search feature but forgot to look in FAQ. Thanks for pointing me to this thread.

I am planning on using Toyota F.I.P.G. to put both the oil pan and side cover back on.

Your trick with the string looks pretty nifty. Was thinking of trying to use some gore-tex floss (thin, strong, and not much sticks to it) prior to reading your hint but sounds like string will do just as well.

Thanks again.

Tom
