I am going to take my engine, trans, and transfer out to clean my frame and rust proof it as best I can. My body is off the frame. Since I work alone would it be easier to just remove the whole assembly at once or should I remove the trans and transfer first. Last time I needed to remove the trans to replace the clutch it fell off the jack and broke my hand. Not a fun project to do alone so I am trying to make it easier for me to do. Any help or advice is appreciated.

One at a time. Just me though; all at once Is easier. I would take this oportunity (while you have it) to clean/inspect/swap any parts that are a pain to get to (i.e. pilot bearing, linkage bushings etc.).

I'm a loner on this stuff too (control freak/ clean freak when it comes to major repairs). I like knowing a buddy of mine isn't stripping bolt heads or snapping rare parts.

Good luck with your pull. Go safe and post pics please.

- Josh

I plan on replacing what I can. I wanted to blow it up trying to get the pilot bearing out last time. That is a royal pain in the ass.

all at once. i just did this myself and it is not that hard.

last engine/tranny/transfer i pulled ...

i lifted the whole body minus the doors and top but included the frame off the engine/tranny/transfer which i blocked up at the start.

i rebuild the engine, clutch, and got the engine/tranny/transfer back together, and lifted the body slipped the e/t/t back under and dropped the body into place.

of course, i had the lift to do this in place and it worked well for me..... alone.

work slow, keep an extra chain on things that are lifted, and be careful.

i had my wife come and check on me every 15 minutes, and i kept one of those small fm radios in my pocket in case i needed help.

I only had to lift the body about three feet in the front and much less in the rear. once the body was off, i turned it upside down and coated the bottom side after rust removal and clean-up.

put everything on rollers to re-install.

Even with the body on I think it's easier to do in one piece. I had all the sheetmetal off the nose of my truck during the engine rebuild a few months back. I took it out in pieces and it was a struggle by myself. All together it wasn't bad at all. One thing I would suggest though is to lift the motor/trans/transfercase up out of the frame and roll the truck out from underneath it. Way easier and safer than tugging on a loaded engine crane. Due to my unfortunate mistakes during my engine build I got more experience pulling and installing my drivetrain than I had hoped.

I have read your thread on your issues if you are the one that had coolant flowing through your motor (That really bites ). I will do it in one piece then but will need to pull it back cause my rear end and spring are dissconected at the moment to replace the frame member, gussets and the triangulated spring hanger. I have one of those warn eazy pull winches I can use to help pull back on it. I would use it to pull the stuff out but its only rated @ 1000 lbs it worked fine for the body but I think the e/t/t would be to much on it.
