Was wondering how many members on here had issues with their engine oil cooler coil on the 1fze have issues , either failure or clogging up. I did a search and found approx. 2 old threads, was wondering if this was a parts issue or issue based on cruisers having previous owners neglect to do preventive maintenance and fluids flushes and changes.

Long story short, I got my hands on a brand new coil and cover, along with 3 new gaskets needed to complete the entire job. in swapping out some old parts : in case if not familiar with this parts' location,,,This can be found on the us engines right under the exhaust manifold near the thermostat housing. I got these brand new parts , ,,, as a direct swap from another cruiser owner that was interested in some used but good parts he needed, welcome to the cruiser world...lol, parts are in original bags and boxes, never used mint condition. I got rid of stuff that was taking up space , for a brand new part I can use or resell. He bought the part thinking it his original part failed,, and turned out the gaskets were toasted from the heat in this area. he waited to long to do the job, and the dealer would not take it back 3 months later,,, he got stuck with this part.

I did a lot of reading on the net and did a search on here as well. It seems like engines with high mileage and maintenance neglect, along with some oil additives some people use to stop leaks else where, causing blockages, when to much of the product is used at once.

Also could look like a head gasket issue with oil and coolant running together, due to bad seals or internal coil corrosion, allowing the fluids to mix in this area.

Just wondering if anyone had this issue. Guess it would make sense to replace your gaskets in this area., to prevent a bigger issue later,, not a very hard job to do. There are 2 internal gaskets, almost looks like the same gasket as the throttle body egr valve gasket, but I am sure it is different, and the 3rd gasket would be the engine oil cooler cover gasket. Which could go bad like the oil pump cover gasket, that we are soo familiar with..lol

Going to pull mine out to check in the near future. I also read those that switched back and forth from green coolant to red Toyota coolant, or vice versa will have some form of buildup on the coil, and can have effect on oil pressure.

Never thought of any of this , until I got this part from a parts swap. Weird how things happen,, never seen this topic come up much. I figured I would share this info here for those who might be interested or having oil pressure issues.

Just saw this thread, I have had oil mixing with coolant and checked and saw oil leaking from the seal. Went through the normal checks for head gasket and they were fine. Now have to replace this seal and going to replace the oil cooler relief valve too for peace of mind. Im sure this is the issue of oil loss and good head gasket. WHEW!!!

Found out that the cooler is the culprit and not the Head Gasket. Some dirty pics...

Is there an actual hole or crack in the oil cooler, and can you post up a close up photo?

Nope just the gaskets that join the cooler to the cooler cover, or the the cooler cover to the block oil passages, they just are old and failed. the cooler has oil inside of it and coolant from the block circulates around it.

Don't need to drain the oil. Just the block.

When I did my HG, which turned into an engine rebuild, mine was caked with a green slimy deposit at least an 1/8" thick. Parts washer with mineral oil didn't touch it. Brake cleaner didn't do much either. Had to use the manual method of using rags. Make sure you get between the plates when doing this, they are tight.

I am sure the cooler was not doing much to cool my oil at that point. This should be part of the PM of a HG rebuild.

I agree when you go the effort of pulling the engine apart you may as well do the other jobs around it and spare yourself the pain later . Is the coolant drain on the engine next to the oil filter ?

Roughly, yes. It is a 14mm hex plug sticking out of the side of the block roughly at the bottom of the coolant jacket. Only bolt in the area not clearly holding something else onto the block.
