This evening after work I fired up to 100 to drive home and immediately knew something wasn't right. From in the cab I could hear a faint banging/clanging sound that was engine speed dependant. I verified the fluids were full and nothing was obviously out of sorts.

I drove home without further issue. It idled smooth and drove just fine. Still made the banging/clanging sound, but seemed to lessen with intensity around 1,700 RPM.

I haven't the foggiest clue what it could be. My gut reaction was water pump, but in my past experiences water pumps have always weeped when bad. Here is a video I shot of the noise. Apparently my phone has a sensitive mic as the loud lifter noise in the video is not accurate, but if you can listen beyond the lifter noise, you can hear the banging/clanging that has me concerned. It is most noticeable at the end of the video clip.

*Yes, the highlift handle works great as a hood prop ;)

I haven't yet started to take it apart as I wanted to get a few opinions from the experts here. It is staying parked for now to avoid any further damage.

250k miles. WP/TB done at 190k per Toyota records.

These videos are a nightmare for sound quality, it makes the car sound like a diesel. Why dont you start by running it without the serp belt on.

Hard to tell from video. I would do what Julian suggested and run it without any accessories (no serp belt) to make sure its none of the accessories making the noise. Maybe could be a broken flex plate? We need to isolate the noise first and then determine whats wrong.

just a bet.... idle / fake water pump / fan bracket bearing/pulley.... pull the serp belt bet it goes away... and if it is... and you have NOT done the water pump timing belt recently you might as well do it now as you are 80% there replacing it...

Sounds like a couple of different issues. I'd add too above suggestions; Put ear to one wheel well at a time, this will help isolate as to side. Sound from front will be similar from either wheel well. One noise sounds like possible a loose heat shield. Another may be power steering pump. Try turning steering wheel, note any pitch change. Power steering fluid needs flushing often. Also look for nicks or missing chucks on drive belt while out, on inner or outer sides. Also turn on air and see if pitch changes (belt on). Bearings (idler, tensioner, fan bracket, power steering pump, alternator & air pump tend) to be loudest when cold. A $10 stethoscope is a nice addition to any tool box.

Every water pump I've seen bad leaked.
1,700 RPM engine runs smoother, this point to something loose.

The water pump, T-belt, T-belt idler & tensioner pulleys and T-belt tensioner are all still turning with drive belt off. So if noise gone with D-belt off, it is not in T-belt area.

Thats not the water pump it is the fan assembly/bracket and idler, I would change the tensioner pulley at the same time.

100% the fan clutch bracket bearing. I just went through that 2 weeks ago.

I am a proponent of replacing that fan bracket with the timing belt and waterpump. I had one go bad even before the first 90k service on my LX. On my LC one went bad at maybe 150k.

I do all the idlers , tensioners, seals etc. Definitely on the 180k !!!

Not a bad shout, I had a timing belt fitted today, fitted the aisen kit but wish I had the fan bracket now as well.

I agree for the $60 it should be done at the time of the timing belt... it is a bearing failure and it's as old as the timing belt... it should be part of the procedure as there is no added labor... ( I also learned the hard way 6k out from the TB I had to do this)

That said... to the OP... The labor time involved to replace this part and you are over 70% there to do the whole timing belt service... the whole list of parts off ebay is $200 plus your $60... and almost the exact same labor... you are 68k into the timing belt... 2/3 I'd just feel better knowing I had new everything....

It really is not that bad... you just have to do what you have to do...

I replaced the fan bracket, idler, serpentine tensioner and serpentine belt today. Thanks to beno for the stellar service and lightening fast shipping. While replacing the fan bracket I was relieved to see the timing belt looked like new and was a Toyota belt. I also replaced a Duralast ignition coil I found with a Denso I had on the shelf. This cured a slightly rough idle. The truck is whisper quiet now.

All in all this was a basic  job. Except for the coolant that ended up all over the shop floor!

Thanks for the help!

I've got the same noise going on. Trying to figure out how to upload the short video......

This (I think):

Is that the fan pulley making that racket? I guess I can remove serp belt and check for sound.....

Sounds very bearing..esque to me.
Your opinions?

Perhaps you meant "Gunga Galunga, Gunga Lunga"??
