Engine Miss

Last weekend I had a mechanic tune my fj40 with a 74 1f engine. He set the points, adjusted the weber carb, new dizzy cap, new plugs, wires and set timing, we also added a can of the engine cleaner in fuel tank he even checked the fuel flow. It drove fine for 2 days and now it has developed a miss. What would cause it to miss in 2 days.

I'd start with the easiest of what he touched....Check for fouled plugs, plug wires, points, cap, loose distributor, fuel filter, and hopefully not a blocked passage in the carb....

Is the miss at idle as well as say...40 mph under load?

ya what ocd said. When is the miss at idle? under acceleration?
Once I got my 69 all tuned up and then set the timing correctly to specs it too had a miss.
The cause was my distributor not advancing enough. I took it apart and cleaned it up runs super now!

Howdy! Constant regular miss is usually ignition. Check plug wires are tight on both ends. Pull off one wire at a time while engine runs to find which cylinder it is. Pull/clean/replace that plug. Irregular miss is usually vacuum leak, timing, idle mix. John

okfj40, I'm checking the same thing today. My 82 2f engine ran better with the old plugs and wires. It now has a pretty cool miss when under load almost like a ping in the exaust every 20-30 sec. So keep us posted if ( when you ) find the prob.

My fj40 missed and back fired prior to the mechanic looking at it. It ran fine at first. When it is idleing it is not smooth, and runs ruff under acceleration. I have not had time to work on it since but will be trying the suggestions soon. thanks everybody.

Plug #1 was off alittle, other than that drove to my shop aprox 12 miles and seemed to run better. Now miss fires only once in a while(I think mine is running rich). Wish I could find a mech that didn't looked so confused every time I took mine to have it looked at. Gave up on that and figured mud is my only chance and eventually I will earn my stripes. Timing is next on my list for my 69 and 82.
