Hello folks! I'm looking to buy an engine hoist to start my project 40. Any thought /suggestions on size...... 1 ton vs. 2 ton?

Thanks!!

I have been using an adjustable reach 2 ton hoist. prolly kragens or some other el cheapo. Now, the thing is you need the reach; with my 2T, I am set to 1/2T at full extend. others will chime in...

I used a very large one... also handy to lift the tub off the frame.

Weight wise, 1 ton should cut it... but most of the offshore one's are generously rated. I'd go with the bigger one. Do you have links/pics?

Sounds similar to the one I used... although the one I borrowed was locally made. With it extended I watched the boom flex up and down while lifting the Engine/Tranny Combo.

I talked a friend into buying an adjustable boom, 1/2 to 2 ton hoist which folds up vertically when not in use & breaks apart for easy loading into a pickup. Whenever I borrow it, he encourages me to hold on to it for a while cause it takes up room in his shop, which is why I thought he should own it instead of me. I actually use it more than he does. It's a nice unit.

a bit, yeah, so work quickly, and don't lay under motor:hillbilly: USE JACK STANDS. and by the numbers, the 1/2T as long as it is a true 1/2T is enough; if I could get the reach with a 1T, I would do so every time over the 1/2, but I wasn't about to remove my bumper:doh: I am not concerned at all really and will continue to use this set-up, but bigger is better, if you can swing it;)

the F series engines (F2s and 3s...) are about 7-800#; Ton = 2000#; 1/2T = 1000#:meh: so you need a hoist to make at least 1000# and have at least the reach from the bumper/cross member to center over load for easiest control while lifting/moving. also need to make sure the outrigger legs width isn't going to run into the wheels, or you'll need to block the truck, remove wheels and then have that much more height to clear...some things I learned:doh:

Thanks to All!!! I think I'll go w the 2 ton. Now I'll just dig into CL and find me a used one. I'm sure I'll find a good "used once" deal. I share some pics of my job as I go. :)

I've had good luck with the Harbor Freight 2 ton collapsible units. Used ones should run 50% of new price. John

I've done it with 1-ton and 2-ton and far far easier with the longer reach of the 2-ton. One of those "load levelers" helps a lot, also, to tilt the engine in and out of the bay.

Good luck. An extra set of hands goes a long way, too.
