Folks,

I'm on a NV,AZ, Ut trip wit my daughter. Last Tue on my way from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon my engine died at 70mph on the Hwy. It hesitated a couple of times and then died completely within about 1 minute. I got it towed back to the Lexus dealed in Henderson NV and got into a rental car to continue my trip. I had scanned the codes and had got 2 ignition coil failures + one Camshaft position sensor out of range. The Lexus dealership got to my car only yesterday (after it had sat there for 2 days) and they told me that 6 of the ignition coils were burnt/broken and the last two were on their way out. Since I wanted to te onto the road I asked them to change them all so I could pick up may car today. Today they called me and said all coils were replaced but the car still would not start. The want to replace the ECU saying that likely the ignition coil failures sent some back current to the ECU and fried it. The ECU seems to be pumping fuel and doing all the other things, but according to them it is not firing the ignition coils. This seems kind of weird to me. Any suggestions or thoughts? I'm quite frustrated with the attitude of this dealership and am half inclined to get the rig towed back to the bay area. I'm headed to Las Vegas now in my rental and am trying to decide the next course of action.

Any other history on the vehicle? I'm trying to figure out how six coils go bad all at the same time and take out the ECU.

How close were you to Area 57? EMP? :-)

No history with the engine - not even a hiccup before this. I'm hoping it is something as simple as the engine crankshaft sensor going bad. Same as you I find it difficult to believe all 6 coils would go bad at the same time, and would take out one circuit of the ECU with it.

Sorry - I meant the Camshaft position sensor...

Take it across the street to the Toyota dealership for another opinion. I know the service manager and the service writer at the Henderson Lexus dealer are LC guys both off road their vehicles, they are a good honest dealership, have been with me in the past. The Toyota Service manager is a great guy and very honest.

Any chance cam sensor wires were left loose at the last 90k and got frayed by the belt?

"Camshaft position sensor out of range" Now what could have caused this code to display?
Did they test compression or look at TB, befor making this ECU req.?

They claim the ECU is not sending out voltage to the coils. Said the tested it with an ozscope. They are now checking some of the sensors.

Yes it seems to be. Only the ignition coil part of the circuit seems to be broken.

rohitash you stated: "codes and had got 2 ignition coil failures" Possible it was only ECU all along, provided they tested before wire harness. I hate when downstream parts are replaced first.

You also stated: "+ one Camshaft position sensor out of range" any word on this?

They said the ig coils were physically damaged. Have not seen them but asked for all the coils back. At this point I've asked them yo replsce the ecu and asked for the old ecu back. They need a few days to source the ecu. I would have expected them to check upstream circuit before replacing 8 coils. But they did not. Seems like a bizare coincidence. However i'm not ruling out some level if incompetence. Being remote does not help :). The camshaft sensor checked out ok.

Call Toyota corporate. Ask them to comp the ECU if you pay for a new master key. My ECU went bad in my 2000 LC and Toyota did it for me in 2011. $500 instead of $2500....

A friend using a well know Mercedes dealer. Had to take back his car three times for same issue. Last part replaced was $5, after $3,500 in upstream parts. They also said were needed:whoops:

:hhmm:I like your idea ^ is it the same ECU?

If you lose your master key, they have to replace the ECU to program new keys. Toyota will comp the ECU costs if you buy two keys at the dealer and pay labor.

When the dealer told me my ECU was bad I told my service advisor that I wasn't going to do the work but he might as well get one on the way because I might lose my master key on the way home. After the strange look and the explanation, he called Toyota and they agreed to the free ECU so I paid for a new transponder key and one remote key.
