Engine capatibility for 62-80

My engine is blown in my 62 and there is a 1991 engine locally that I can pick up but had a question about capatability.

Specifically if the bell housing would be the same and would hook. It's the same transmission right, but I didn't know about the bell housing.

Any other things might be different? Smog setups, starter etc??

Thanks for the help- need to get moving asap!
 
I believe the crank is different. Not sure what this equates to though. Sorry about that. CruiserDan is the guy you need to ask.
 
There was a crankshaft change during FJ62 production. If you have a post-change 62 the 80 3FE should work. I do not remember the date but I can look it up for you.
 
Is there any way to tell when the 89 was produced? I looked on the inside of the door jams like other vehicles I've had, but there was nothing.

Is there a site that I can put the VIN in to tell me the manufacture date?

I would think if you have the torque converter drive plate on the used engine in the junk yard it would then bolt up to the torque converter in the 62. The trannies are the same number but have different T-cases and ways they connect together. later robbie

FJ62's were produced until 1-90. 10-89 to 1-90 62's have the same crank as an 80 series 3FE.


Granted late 62's would be very rare.

I have not sought one out, no. I have not had a need to actually find one.

One of my guys just sold a new door to a local body shop for one built in 11-89 (after the crank change).

I only ask because I have never seen one, nor has Mark, nor has anyone else I know. My theory is of course that the 90s are all 89s sold as 90s in 1990. My 1990 (titled) FJ62 had an 11/89 build date.

The 10th digit of the vin dictates the "model year" of the vehicle. "K" is 1989 and "L" is 1990.


The parts catalog (normally reliable but not 100% correct) indicates 1-90 as production end for 62's.


It also shows 1-98 as production end for 80 series. I have not seen an 80 newer than 12-97.
 
you mean computer don't ya? if you mean paper parts catalog......I want one :)

actaully the folks are in Oz for 3 weeks, their mission is to go to every toyota dealer they see(big or small) and ask for paper parts catalogs for me........they are bearing pics of what I am looking for as well as the pics of my Cruisers........to to show what a nut case I am :D

Oh good lord, I hope they have a more interesting mission than that.... ;)

heck if I know, last I heard they were on the west coast nailing roo's with a camery in the middle of the night.

but all I know is I got the keys(actaully it has no keys just a code) to their the new house and am enjoying it a heck of alot :D
