Hello all,

My tags expire this month so over the weekend I took my 85 FJ60 into the emissions place. They ran the test but when it came time to fully maxing out the cruiser the tech couldnt get it up to the necessary speed required to run the test? I have taken it in and passed the test before however that was with a 4 speed tranny, I now have an h55F 5 speed tranny in it, could that be the reason? maybe the gear ratio is off. I don't know what to do. I took it to 2 different test stations and they both said that the vehicle could not be tested because it didnt have enough power. Any suggestions?

What test location did you go to? Did you let them do the load test or did you drive it? I never let them drive it and i keep it in 3rd gear, I don't even start in 1st gear since it's on the rollers. You need to drive at somewhere around 35 mph, not sure why it wouldn't make power?

I went to the emissions place in Chandler on Beck and the one on 16st and the riverbottom. They wouldnt let me drive it myself, is that an option? they told me that I had to wait in the booth.

They have to drive it themselves. You have the option of sitting in the passenger's seat.
Maybe they tried to start in 5th?

I always go to the station near Main and Dobson in Mesa, no matter where I live in the E. Valley.
No reason, really, except that I always pass there, as long as I buy a new gas cap first.

Howdy! What size tires and gear ratios are you running? If you can run down the freeway OK in it, it has enough power. If they lugged it down way too low on RPM, it won't work right. If they were trying to do the 35 mph part in 5th gear instead of 3rd, that would explain it. I would have a talk with the supervisor about having someone else drive it. John

Attempting to educate them, probably is not going to end well. I would go with rubber under drive, install small, stock size tires, borrowed if necessary?

the guys at the Scottsdale station asked me exactly where the gears were, and they tested the shifting before the actual test - they were really sorry when it didn't pass

in Mesa, they just grind the thing

I'll have updated info on Friday :bang:

Thats a great idea, ....anyone in the Phx area care to loan me some stock tires? I'll return tem as soon I hopefully pass the test. I knew that I should have kept those....doh.
