Well after having the valves adjusted and the right dist put in and the motor timed I thought I'd go and see if I can get this thing legal. Here are the results.

FAIL! They said it was just running rich. Could I just adjust the fuel mixture and have it run really lean for the test? I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks,

Chet

I can't speak to Toyota carbs. I've only tinkered with Q-jet, Weber and Holley, but......

Generally idle mixture fiddling isn't going to help the loaded readings. That sounds like something internal to the carb. Maybe a misadjusted float level or a bad gasket.

And on the idle reading I'm don't think you can adjust away both readings that far off their standard. Could be coming from the same internal problem though. If Toyota has a configurable idle jet, a smaller one might help.

You mentioned getting the timing right. If you haven't done it lately, fresh ignition parts might be worth it. Cap, rotor, plugs, wire, (points if you have them)

I just had the valves adjusted, toyo vac advance dist. with pertronix electric ignition, and the motor was timed and tuned allegedly.

I guess a look at the carb is in order then. It may run good, but that usually is counter to what AZDEQ wants to sniff.

The carb was just rebuilt but who knows? I'm sure the shop that worked on the valves did some adjusting to it too. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

I used to do this for a living. The best that I can say now is.....
Move to Prescott........
We don't do this at all, at least for now...

My in-laws live in Prescott valley so I may end up registering it there anyway but they didn't check under the hood and see all the missing smog equipment. If the damm thing just ran a little better I'd be free and clear. It's definitely a timing/carb issue. When I advanced the dist. it runs a lot smoother but I don't want to mess with the carb too much (don't know what I'm doing) Anybody have a good carb guy/gal in gilbert/mesa/chandler area?

Howdy! Yea, got two of them(besides me of course) in West Chandler. Give me a call this weekend. 480-899-5502. John

I gave you a recommendation ...

They had a hard time with my 55, didn't put the distributor in right and locked up the motor, spent 2 days trying to figure out my brake issues and couldn't fix them. They were the ones who did the valve adjustment and also supposedly tuned it up (timing & carb)... Nice guys but I wouldn't go back. :frown:

uh, really sorry to hear :frown:

when all else fails run the tank down to a 1/4 add alcohol, pass test fill up immediatly:hillbilly: its worked for me a few times

justweldit beat me to it. A gallon of alcohol will work wonders. FWIW, I registered my cat-less 80 down in Cochise County. Aside from no emissions testing, my insurance rates dropped by half!

Which varient works better?
rubbing alchohol.webp

Yup. Isopropyl is like medical or rubbing alcohol. Denatured is the stuff you clean up chewing gum with. Maker's Mark is way to good to waste on chewing gum or medicine. STRICKLY FOR SIPPIN!! BTDT John
