In my 1970 FJ40, I nixed my rear heater. I was thinking about removing the metal Y fittings (see pic; items 11 & 12) at the firewall, too. I'd just fly the heater hose thru the firewall and right into the heater core. Has anyone ever done this? Is this genius? Or madness?

Heater hose won't fit through the OEM grommet. I have considered doing the same; instead I replaced the Y's with larger ID straight copper tube to increase flow to the heater core.

The metal tubes are also available with no "Y" for the rear heater. I might have a set.

My hoses go directly to the heater thru the firewall. Not using the factory grommet, I installed some hose chafing material on the hoses to protect them.

Probably stock FJ45 stuff..

Got pics?

Rigger, would you be interested in selling those fittings to me?

'nother vote for the homemade copper pipe route - I would suggest you add a high quality full flow ball valve to sweat onto the engine side of the pipe. Unless you need the extra cooling effect of the heater core during the summer time.

Good idea!

I used the caps pictured in Item #13 of your diagram to plug to block off the coolant flow to the rear heater. I thought that's what was used without the rear heater option.

Well, for later models:

87248A PIPE, HEATER WATER INLET, A
87248-60102 HJ47, FJ4*; FR HEATER 1
87248-60192 HJ47, FJ4*..V, TP; RR HEATER 1
87248-60192 FJ4*..(V, TP)..(GEN, EUR); RR HEATER 1
87248-60280 FJ4*..LHD..GEN; FR HEATER, W/COOLER 1
87248-60300 FJ4*..LHD..(V, TP)..GEN; RR HEATER, W/COOLER

87249A PIPE, HEATER WATER OUTLET, A
87248-60203 FJ4*..V, TP; RR HEATER 1

87248-60311 FJ4*..LHD..(V, TP)..GEN; RR HEATER, W/COOLER 1
87249-60104 FJ4*; FR HEATER 1

Both still available from Toyota:

Item Number Core Price Price
8724860102 $0.00 $22.57

PIPE, WATER

8724960104 $0.00 $25.05

PIPE,WATER

Looks like early models use 2x of the -60102 part instead of two different p/ns.

I messed around with this Idea once, I bought two 5/8" Brass barbed X barbed Brass fitting the center ring fits into the OEM grommet too. I have not put It in yet still running the "Y"

use the russell bulkhead fittings and just connect a hose or use the braided hose. at least you wont ever have to replace it again

Kinda difficult to route your rear heater in though....Hmm....maybe he likes frozen rear passengers!

details details details.....

I might have a set of those single pipes, I'll look tonight, you will miss that heater in the winter, Larry
