Hi Please help

As I am sure most of you know when you turn the ignition on your 80 series to "ON" position the warning lights on the dash all come on usually and after a few seconds the glow plug light turns off. and then if you start the car they all go off.

My question is what controls this? as when I now switch my ignition to the on position non of this occurs but it still sounds like the glow plug solenoid kicks in/out.

Dunno if the petrol 80's have glow plugs, but on diesel 80's there is a box behind/above the glovebox inside the dash (at least on RHD 80's - it might be in a different spot with LHD) that is the 'Q' box glowplug timer unit. I don't know what it does other than turn off the glowplug relay after a period of time or if/how it can vary the time period based on input from the glowplug circuit temp sensor (seperate to the temp sender for the gauge in the dash).

Re the warning lights, they go off once the alternator starts working. A tell-tale for an alternator not working right is all the warning lights staying on (or coming on). Alternator problems can be as simple as the 3-pin connector at the back coming out, or the brushes and/or slip rings could be worn, or a fusible link could be blown, or an earth might have come off somewhere.

Um, why would a GAS engine have glow plugs!?!?!?!?
