Hi,
I search and found a lot of information about EGR. But I don't know what it looks like.

Can someone post a picture of the EGR and the also a picture of the serounding so I can locate it.

Thanks

There are plenty of pics of the EGR on and off the engine, just have to search for them on this site; if you can't find it here (did you look in FAQ?) you can
go to www.sor.com; then do a parts search for EGR for an 80.
They have diagrams of the systems and parts, with links to photos. Just don't buy anything from sor until you have shopped around; you can usually get parts cheaper via cruiserdan.

The EGR is located at the back top side of the engine near the firewall; looks like a little flying saucer, and attached to it is the vacuum modulator.

The more important question is, what is the problem (? MIL/check engine light on)

The two lines in the foreground are not routed correctly, just in case it looks different than yours.

I don't have a problem. I fix things before I have problems.
With a 11 years old vehicle, I just replace things on schedule. For example, if the EGR will have to be replaced after 11 years, it does not matter to me if I'll do it now or next year.

Thanks for the picture, I should be able to find it now.

That may be a good idea; swap out the EGR and Vacuum Modulator before they die; most people feel it would be best to pull the intake manifold and throttle body off, clean them thoroughly, and while you are at it, replace the EGR VSV(on the bottom side of the intake) and the PHH(Pesky Heater Hose) which is down below the intake, as well as all the hard to get at vacuum hoses.

Seems like sooner or later we all have the problem; question is whether to wait for them to fail or replace them now.

There are tons of threads on this; search for P401.

good luck.

Not to hijack, but could you explain what your test tells you, and how to use it in diagnosing a P401?

When vacuum is applied to the EGR, the engine should stumble or stall...

Clamp the top hose and apply vacuum to see if the EGR's diaphragm is torn (if it holds vacuum, it's good)

Clamp the VSV hose on the bottom of the intake and apply vacuum again to check for hose leaks (again, if it holds vacuum, they should be good)

My EGR, modulator and hoses all checked out fine, so I replaced the VSV for my 401 fix

You guys giving the OP advice should use proper terminology even if the OP didn't. If you are explaining to him the location of the EGR valve then call it by the correct name. EGR=Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The term 'EGR' does not describe a component. There is an EGR modulator, an EGR temp sensor, an EGR valve, and they are all part of the EGR system.

:sheesh:
