Guys,

Wanted to replace my key cylinder - as mine was to the stage that a screwdriver, or any random key could start it. I bought one used on ebay that was supposed to be a direct replacement. turns out, something was changed during the years so I have to remove the entire housing. Got the steering wheel off, got the hub off, but now this bearing is being a real PITA. Are my missing something, or is there a way to get this thing off without trying to use a flathead and a BFH?

Obviously I'm not well versed in doing this, so please excuse my ignorance...

Clean the shaft ahead of where you're trying to move the bearing

A nice big end wrench and a BFH?

Some heat from a hot air gun on the bearing?

Good luck

Did you remove the snap ring?

Clean the shaft, maybe use some fine sand paper

you could always cut it off if all else fails

The angle grinder is ready :D

Thanks man. I tried heating with the hot air gun with little success.

I did not see the snap ring  Is it on the top there caked in grease? Thanks

Wonderful - thank you  Once the snap ring is out should the bearing just slide right back out? Or will I still have difficulty removing it?

Thanks again,
Jonny

Should just slide of if memory serves me right.

Well that makes me feel better - thank you. Supposed to drive this thing an hour away tomorrow to drop off for paint - hoping I can get it all put back together in time :)

Thanks again folks,
Jonny

Let me know if you need help on the bearing. You can use my mapp gas torch tonight if you need to.

There's a snap ring in that grease?
Ha!

Happy you didn't go at it with a grinder before you discovered that.

LOL - well I took the snap ring out and it still wouldn't budge. So then I lubed everything and it still wouldn't come out... Then I tried talkin to it all sweet like and it still wouldn't come out. Then I had no choice but to break out the angle grinder :meh:

Bye bye bearing :flipoff2:

It will slide off

DX, I just did mine a couple of weeks ago. It will not just slide off, but it did come off with a little help. I ended up supporting the bearing with two peices of wood and hit the nut on top with a hammer. Another member mentioned wetsanding/polishing the sleeve to make sure it slides right off. I didn't have to hit it that hard and it started moving.
