Awesome info on elockers guys, very helpful with a mod i am 90% committed to...Can anyone detail the difference in ENGAGING an elocker vs an ARB?

There aren't many of these in Aussie!

I have ARB at present in my 40 and am looking at putting 80 series diffs with factory elockers under it. The ARB is pretty much instant on and off.
unlike fine gears on the arb, the big gears on the elocker would suggest to me only do it at slow speeds - is it right to say when engaging you would have to be moving so they engage?

How much slower is the elocker, and can it be done on the fly - or only at slow speeds?

Sorry if this has been discussed - but search was not my friend on this one!

Thanks scotto
from down under...

yo scotto... try 80's tech... they know e lockers in and out... this section's more for hilux's and 4runners... :flipoff2: newbie :)

:crybaby: MODERATED???

Thanks Ads. I keep forgettin everything in the States is upside down....

yeah... owned there scotto

I replied to the other elocker post, but here's my 2 cents here 2:

I don't think trying to engage splines at speed is a good idea. Even though everything is hardened, beveled, etc I could see a situation where tires are spinning at a high velocity, you hit the switch on the locker, 2-3 millimeters of the splines engage, the tires gains traction and shears the splines.

The 80's locker controller only allows the locker to be engaged in 4 low.

Good luck.

Nice one.
I plan on (trying?!!) to wire them basically with something like an elec window switch. They are going under a diesel 40 - no ecu there!
So they are that quick at locking unlocking good o these should be fun :D

thanks scott

Well, it's nice to see we get something on this side of the pond that you Ozzies don't :flipoff2:. I installed the Tacoma electric locker in my 85 mini-truck (Hilux to you). It was necessary to stop before hitting the switch, as I found the one time I tried it when moving. The locker then, most of the time, requires movement to engage. In high traction conditions it might take awhile for the locker to lock as the teeth need to match up. When the tires were slipping it was very fast.

Same goes when unlocking. Sometimes I would have to steer left and right to get the locker to unlock.

I didn't find it all that annoying.
