Here's a vid of the Dyna S Crew Cab 4x4. Needs some suspension mods to make it more articulate :D

There is also a Holden/Chev gasser conversion for sale on Gum Tree that might give you a few ideas.

Gooday Christian,

The R151 is an Aisin transmission used by Toytota and Chrysler Jeep.

The R151 box can be set up with a side lever hat akin to the Hiace, and you have a plethora of options for shifters such as Mitsubushi and Hyundai car.

My Dyna uses rods instead of the N*****'s cables which are ok since I don't have a tilt cab.

Before I get too involved, can you please run me through what it is that you plan to do... the R151 box and suitable transfers are a bit lightweight to be used with "normal" or non-portal finals in anything with a bit of massd.

Hey RU 12

Long story short I fitted an 1KT-t engine, R151f gearbox and a split-case transfer in an old army Volvo TGB1314, like the C303, but with genuine 6wd.
The Volvo has portals, making the strain on the gearbox and transfer lighter.

You can see the engine start-up here:

The shifter I've made here:

And the first test drive here:

I have been looking for a solution here, on Toyotadiesel, talked to Mark's Adapters, other different vendors etc. Without getting any answers. What I've thought about is a R451/R151f clone, which I've asked about here on MUD:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/70-series-tech/508144-gearbox-gurus-please-r151-2-r451-2-clone-help.html

But it seems like I've finally found one who actually knows! Thanks!
Maybe we should move this to the thread I linked to last, instead of side-tracking yours?

Hello Christian,

Looking at your shifter design - not bad, however if rods could be substituted where possible it would add much rigidity and precision to the mechanism.

Just a couple of questions before I stick my neck out.

* How much clearance do you have down the right side of the main gearbox case?
This assists withshifter design options.

* Is your front diff housing centre or offset, and if offset, which way?

* If you see a Volvo F12 or F16 from late 80s to mid 90s have a look at the sesign of the gearshift. Simple and elegant, and easy to copy (on a lightert scale).

If your truck could be adapted similarly the main points of consideration are:

* sufficient clearance over top of bellhousing in engine compartment,
* suitable mounting point for shifter base on engine.

The groovy thing here is you may end up with a nicely forward leaning stick, just like a proper truck.

I am off on one of my research jaunts over the next few days, let me see what can be sniffed out.

Mud ate my post in the other thread.

I was thinking similar to above. If you can duplicate the shifter mount and fabricate a linkage similar to the one found here.

http://www.australianimages.com.au/conversion/index3.php

I think this can be refined a bit. I'd be inclined to try to use a factory shifter mount from a r151 gearbox so you get the ball and socket pivot, it would be easier to seal as well. The linkage from the thread I linked is too chunky IMO.

Hey RU12 4X4, do you know of any in the R15x family that has cable shift?
I need one for my 1KZ-t converted Volvo 6X6...
Hey Christian,

Went digging and found an R452 and a 151 complete (from a 100 series), looks the same as yours.

I am reliably informed that the hybrid you plan is possible.

Would you like me to attempt a dummy fitup of the iron case?

Sorry for not responding, I've had a pretty full weekend to say the least, so I have been off-line.
Besides building on the house, I've taken a burned (litterally) 12H-t and got it running again in my HJ61.
It came from a car that burned out and was pretty fire-damaged. The diesel filter console was melted off, the primer pump handle burned away, the oil filler cap melted down below the valve train into a perfect copy of the pluyg below etc. But after moving diesel pump, pipes, and everything else, I have a HJ61 that's running again, but damn, saturday was work from 8am to sunday 4am... Then up again at 0830 because the daughter wanted to... She's barely two, so hard to argue with on that! :)

But let me take it frokm the top:

RU12:

  1. I have plenty of space between the box and the rail for a sideshift like the Dyna one, I'll snap a pic later.
  2. The front diff is offset. just like Toyota.
  3. I have been unable to find a F12 or F16 to look at, but is it like the trucks I have driven, it will be a rod system. Although they work there's two drawback; one is noise, the other is more important; There's no room for a rod/solid connection, the 1KZ-t takes up a lot more room at the top than the Volvo B30 did.
And I prefer to get the top of the gearbox as low as possible as it will interfere with the floor in the camper compartment.

Mudgudeon:

I need my shifter forward of the engine, the Volvo is forward control ;)

RU12:

I'd be really grateful, but it is too much to ask of you to fit them up, and if it works, I'd be compelled to buy it from you, for money which I don't have right now ;)

But I'd love some pics of the R451 and your opinion. My thought was to split both down at the iron center flange and use the front half of the R452 in order to get the shifters, and the back halt of the R151 to be able to mate it up with the splitcase transfer. Does it sound right to you?

Thanks for your help and time!

Here's a pic as promised:

Damn, I need to get this thing under a roff! a 1 year stand still while building house has taken it's toll! :-(

Howdy Christian,

My good friend runs a transmission shop and is under the firm impression that this is a doable thing.

Check the following numbers for 151 vs 452 on toyodiy:

* Input shaft bearing
* Front countershaft bearing
* Front bearing retainer and gasket.

I had my own transmission shop up until the lure of the road got the better of me and I remember some hassle trying to hybridise R150 and R154. But that is in the past.

I will send the photos in a couple of days, and best of luck.

So what transfer case are you using, I have a 1985 dyna 400 with a 1W engine(Hino w04) and w50 aka h50 gearbox with w bellhousing. Are you using transfer of h55? If so what do you use for handbrake as it's on the tailshaft on h50 like on the old 47 series transfer cases no split case transfer.
