"my 60 gets decent mileage, otherwise I might be concerned" Well when your 20 some odd gallon fuel tank is empty at the top of Dusy Ridge, don't say I didn't warn you.

"How did the trail look compared to last year?" Well when I went in in October of last year there was snow on the ground so it was much easier this year. The north gate keeper is as hard as ever. Tight turns and big rocks.

"and last year when I took the XJ there it was a LOT worse than I was expecting" Your problem is obvious.
 
As a 4 time victim, let me tell you, this trail sucks the gas. I think its the high altitude and the slow going. In my 40, I bring 15 extra gallons and usually get back to Shaver with under 1/2 tank. Wagons might get by with just 10 extra gallons. Figure 1 mile/gallon and you won't be far off.

This trail also breaks parts. One of our guys broke an 80 series sector shaft near Ershim Lake (actually just before divorce rock) so go prepared. The same guy also broke an 80 series birf and he was driving carefully.

Any truck with a roof is going to get some body damage. There are so many rocks that push you into the trees that no amount of careful driving prevents at least a bit of damage. Fatigue is a major factor on this trail, especially mid Thompson hill, which you usually hit in the late afternoon.

I'm doing it next month while there are still plenty of mosquitos.:D

Not really. That XJ (have two, the other's pretty much left for road trips and winter driving) held its own on trails way harder than Red, and from what everyone always said about Red being easy enough to get a stocker in... well, it wasn't last year when I went. Needless to say, THAT XJ is more capable than MY 60. Again, things aren't always as they seem by gross generalization.

I bought this particular 60 for its range. With the 32s it has now, it burns noticeably less fuel than the aforementioned XJ. Odometer's way off due to tires and I'm too lazy to do math, so I haven't really spent a lot of time figuring out its mileage capabilities. I figured I'd be happy as long as it did at least as well as that XJ.

Thanks for the details. if you've seen my 60, you'd know why I wasn't so concerned about body damage. It's so rusty I probably should wheel with a shop vac so that wildlife doesn't get tetanus. Shoot, just looking at it requires a current tetanus shot.

It's funny, you're not the first one I've heard of talking about dusy as not being difficult, but causing a LOT of carnage.

If you haven't heard of it, the Picaridin stuff works well and doesn't have the deet smell to it. Someone told me about it before I went to south america last year.
 
So is Oct 2-5 the official date :D

I just finished the trail.

Thompson Hill was tough, I had to winch 2 times.

It's a very dry year, and there were virtually no mosquitos.

We had a blast and the only damage was a blown bead lock, and a powdered lower knuckle bearing causing unstable steering.

Have fun in October but be prepared for cold since it was already mid 30s at night.
 
Yes. Unless we get a freak snow storm.


I will be sad if it snows.This is my big trip of the year since I cant hit the Rubicon at the end of the month :D

This sounds like fun. I just need to get some rock sliders and a locker of some type. If any one knows of one please let me know. Do you think 35's will fit with the ome 2.5" lift?

What would give you the idea that I have a set of 4.11 thirds, out of a FJ55, that I could just weld up and throw in my cruiser. So now with that taken care of just need some 35" and sliders. A rear bumper would also be nice but not nessary, stock would do.
 
So now that we're down to just over a month, who's still in?

I should be good as long as I get my junk done in the next 2 weeks so I can have a couple of shakedown runs. Don't really feel like breaking the 60s cherry on Dusy.

BTW, I don't know what my start date will be for the trail. If I get a job between then and now, :rolleyes: I might have to start Friday night and mob in to catch the rest of the group. :steer: We'll see as time gets closer.
