Hi Guy's, I am awarding MYSELF, the DUMB S*** of the YEAR AWARD, based on what I messed up this afternoon ,...I had mistakenly installed my new carrier bearings first,...on my new ARB locker, BEFORE, installing and torqueing the ring gear on,...Looking back,...I could have still made this work with no problems,...but THAT'S if I had it to do over again,...

I heated the ring gear in the oven, and it slipped right on, and I hand tightend 2 opposing bolts as I cut the 2 zip tyes, so far so good, It was very awkward to try to torque the ring gear trying to hold it by myself, and I remembered seeing how in the instructions, they tightened one end in the vice with the ring gear and nuts facing up, So, I went to the vice, and of course the only place left to grip it was the stub out past the carrier bearing where the air seal go's, well, I didn't want to mar the stub, so I put shop rags on the vice jaws and tightened it, With nobody to help hold it, it was still awkward trying to get 85Ftlbs. on the nuts. (with blue locktite of course).

When I was all done, and took it out, the end looked like this:doh:

Messed up !!!

SO, The third pic. is how it looked after a little sand cloth,...I will air test it tomorrow, and see if it holds,...if it doesn't I will either figure a way to fill and smoothe it, or, try to get the new end piece from ARB ^%&*((*&^#@!!!!!!!

if it makes you feel any better i plumbed a coolant line from my head into my valve cover( was blocked off on my old engine, thought it was something to do with smog on my new one). thought my $100 2F had a cracked head/ blown head gasket until i pulled the intake manifold and realized my class 1 tard out! :censor: runs like a champ now that she's dried out. hope it seals for you:beer:

Do not even waste your time doing that...

So you are aware:

That seal area is garbage, will not seal properly and will need to be replaced.

The whole locker body, ring gear down against the top of the vise jaws works great for getting the ring gear bolts to torque.

Purchase a larger vice if you cannot open yours large enough to accommodate the ARB carrier.

Along with your new piston cap, piston cap bolts, 8mm and 6mm and lock tabs, you will want to purchase a new carrier bearing as you will play hell getting that new removed from that junk piston housing.

DUDE! That sucks! Go with Steve's advice. The last thing you want is to have a failure, and have to take the carrier back out of the rig to fix. Good luck.

Well,...I have one last idea,...I will post results, The vice was plenty big, but I had already pressed on the bearings, If I would have just waited for someone to help me hold it, I could have torqued it without hurting it, (sigh)

Just kind of jumping in here but have you looked for a Redi-Sleeve or Speedi-Sleeve to fit? I have seen many wasted bearing and seal areas fixed with them. Just a thought.

I know this is gonna sound stupid. But could he not try using a speedi sleeve with a little sealant? He would have to drill a new air hole might be worth a shot.

Edit: Didn't see the post above.

If you can't get a replacement, a good machine shop can fill and turn the piece back down to spec.

Thanks Plowboy,...I am attending to that fix as we speak,..I HOPE it works...

You know what,I just rememberd I silver soldered a crank seal surface once took a long time sanding it and it wasnt perfect but it never leaked,Im still useing the same welder to date ,that was probably 20 years ago.

Thanks Dargreg, are you an 'ol weldor?
