A buddy just picked up a ‘70 for a good deal. It’s far from pristine, but the price was more than fair. As an added bonus it came with an interesting winch. Can’t say I’ve seen this one before and I doubt the lawyers would let it leave the factory like this

As sketchy as the chain drive is being completely exposed- at least it’s loose too.
The truck came with a Ramsey remote, but I’m guessing it’s not a Ramsey winch.

Couple solenoids remote mounted to the fender well above the battery(s). No fairlead/hawse.

So has anyone ever seen one of these? I’m guessing it more of a hodgepodge then a store bought unit.

Looks "home built"/modified to me. Not seeing a brake/lock either - might be enough gear reduction to hold the load but I'd rather not be down hill when you find out.

I seriously considering making hydraulic winch to run of a power steering pump, might make a clip on wood splitter too.

Didn’t MileMaker make a hydraulic winch in the 90’s. I may be bias, but I love my electric winch. I have yet to over stress it. Your results may vary.

Yes I think MM made the ones on the Humvee. Having spent like 8 hours on a pto winch going up or down a mountain in a duece and half with a signal shelter on her back pulling a generator trailer with 2 jennies and 4 fiddy five gallon drums of gasoline plus eight 5 gallon jerry cans. There isn't an eclectic winch that could do that except on nuke sub or some other big fixed unit.

I would love to have an electric winch at the back to pull me back out of its only half way up on the duck puddle. Engine off - pto's and PS pump winches are very useful.

A friend had an old say #4000 crawler. It had a little hydraulic winch the size of a 2 gallon bucket and would drag kitty up a 30* slope with the tracks locked.

Looks like it the winch was flipped 180° the input shaft would be close to lining up to the stock location of the opening in front frame member for the Toyota PTO winch and the Ramsey PTO winch. The Toyota was designed for the Land Cruiser. Ramsey were more more universal. The plates that bolt to the side frame rails were taller than Toyota's so the input shaft lines up with opening in the front crossmember. The lap of a chain guard or sign of brackets to mount one this winch start out as a PTO winch convert to electric. My 73 FST has a electric winch made from a military jet engine starter motor. It was made locally in the Phoenix area. Plate has a company name and phone number. While not home made it is a small step above home made.
