If you already have a vac advance dizzy (non-USA) just get the pertronix. It was just a hair over $100 for the module and the matching hotter coil. Works great.

I have been curious about these three choices also for awhile? If someone can explain the pros and cons of the three it would be helpful.

DUI= Davis Unified Ignition, this is a GM based distributor produced by Davis. It is a pretty much a drop replacement for the entire igntion setup on a cruiser. It has been curved specifically for the F or 2F engine.
You add one hot wire(from igntion) and plug in your tach (if you have one) plug in a set of new wires and your ready to go. You should change the plug gap to compensate for the change in spark, I can't rememeber but .050-.055 maybe. Your advance will also change a bit too (12*). The coil sits inside the cap and is susposed to be a high perf. unit. Points are eliminated.

I went this route for several reasons. the truck I bought was a pile of milk crates and while I had two disty's and ignitors every combination of parts I used wouldn't work. In one box I had a DUI set up. I dropped it in and the truck ran. I tried getting all of the part together for the oem ignition and it proved to be more money than it was worth. The DUI is so simple an idiot can install one. all of the out dated and hard to find oem ignition stuff is eliminated when going to and HEI.

The petronics drop in basically eliminates your points. It also may offer a higher energy ignition if you get a box with it. From what I see in the ad posted above it looks to basically replace the points with a different pickup arrangment. I installed similar devices on Bosch distys for air cooled vw's; they work well if you don't like points.

The ebay distys are just GM HEI distributors made to work on our engines, very much like the DUI, EXCEPT they may not have the appropriate curve (advance) built into them. This is essentially what your paying for with a Davis unit (DUI). Will it work? yes; will it work as good as the DUI... maybe... maybe not.
I would not expect a disty for a chevy six to work as well as a disty for a toyota. If the curve has been modified so that it is opitimal for our engines, then there is no reason it will not work like the DUI as it is basically the exact same disty. You paying for the R&D and marketing.

There are threads here to show you how to modify a standard HEI to work wel on our trucks. I'd rather just buy one from Davis and drop it in and then forget about fine tuning it. I've got other things to worry with.
So which one do I choose from? It's all a matter of personal choice. I went that route because I had one available, it was simple and required no special stuff. it also eliminated all of the factory oem ignitor Bull****. That oem is great stuff if: you've got a vac advance disty, you've got a good ignitor and you have the patience ( and $) to wait for parts when they go bad. One major advantage with the HEI OR DUI IS that the parts are readily available at any parts store. they are all gm parts. that right there is hard to beat.
Oh yeah, it's not waterproof like the oem is, but you can do a good job of waterproofing one if you spend a little time on it.

Good luck

Oh yeah if you don't have a Non-usa spec disty aka a vacuum advance disty NOT a USA vac retard unit, the I would relly be prone to going DUI/HEI. I say this because the NON-USA disty's are pricey.

The most significant difference is price.

If you are expecting to see any performance or mileage gains over any other properly function distributor, you will likely be poorer and disappointed

Seems like DUI is easier and I can be working or driving rather than tuning, waiting or fixing.

So my 71 F engine that has a vacuum retard and points set up and the DUI unit will elimate all of that? Does it use a mechanical advance?

It uses a vacuum advance and a mechanical advance as well.

dui

i love dui. slapped it in ran great then died. called perf. people and they sent a new coil and trigger at no charge -works great! jim:beer:
