How do I identify a dual diaphragm brake booster in a wrecking yard? I assume they are way thicker than a single? Is it obvious just by looking at any toyota booster whether its single or dual (thick vs thin? or any other way to identify)? How thick vs thin (in inches) are the duals vs the singles?

Lets compile a list of dual diaphragm booster sources that fit the 40/55 bolt pattern. Let me know if this is correct:
Late model 40/55 (76+?)
Fj60/62
80/450
Turbo 2wd/4wd
Any V6 pickup or 4 runner
T100
Tacoma (all?)
Early (what yr?) Supra

Anything else?

A dual diaphram is easy to spot. It is roughly twice as long as a single diaphram. A single diaphram booster is about 3-4" long. A dual diaphram is 7-8" long.

Unless you are insistent on a dual diaphram, I see no need to worry about finding one. A single diaphram booster from a newer vehicle (i.e. mini truck) works just fine.

left- dual
right - single

Don't even bother looking for a dual, you'll never find one. If you do it's most likely junk too.

Ditto to everything FF LC Freak said.

So that list is incorrect, all those vehicles don't have duals in them?

I just want to avoid alot of bending my existing lines. And I'd like as much boost as possible for 36+ tires, v6 calipers, and a bigger MC.

I don't know about your list. I have never seen a dual in anything but a disc FJ40. The single in my pic is from a 97 LX470 (80 series).

And bending new lines is not a prerequisite. Just tweak them to the new positions.

here's another pic I found showing the two types side-by-side

Reviving this old thread.

1973Guppie posted these pics of his booster. It's clearly dual-diaphram. He says it came from a '81 Minitruck. Part #53-2460.

Here's the picture that matches that part number from Advanced Auto:

It's $128 shipped after core return, free shipping and 20%discount from Advanced Auto and $326 from some Amazon.com affiliate. There appears to be no Advanced Auto anywhere around here. I'm not thrilled about dealing with mailing back a core. Maybe I'll just pay the extra $25.

I realize I don't actually need a dual-diaphram booster. The '91 4runner booster in my '78 works fine.

Comments from the peanut gallery welcome.
