First I want to say I've read many threads about different setups and also read the posts in tech links and many get way more involved and complex than I want. I'm actually trying to do a simple setup and I'm looking for the one that makes the most sense.

Now, I have a 73 FJ40 that I purchased a few months ago and I've been working on it since I got it. I have a Warn 8274 winch, CB, CD/Radio, Amp with some speakers and one sub and a small power inverter I will use on occasion. I was going to run a small aux fuse box to the back of the truck for other add ons later. I will be installing some additional offroad lights, etc later (i have an extra pair of Hella 500s i may put on because i already have them)...

That said I also have a boat and some extra marine supplies I was thinking of using. I have an extra marine switch for running dual batteries in a boat. I also have an extra new marine deep cycle battery, extra 2 gauge wire, etc. My searches found this setup by Boston Mangler and I was thinking of a similar system.

Baja Overland

I like the simplicity of the system just wondering if I would drive around with the switch in the "All" position to keep both batteries charged. Should I wire accessories to the 2nd battery and use my primary for starting etc? I also stoped by Napa and looked at their battery isolator which would automatically switch between batteries and regualte charging between them (34$ part). Would this then eliminate the need for the Marine switch I have?

I am trying to spend little money on this since I already have most of what I need (I think). Is it worth it to buy the Napa Isolator?

The FJ40 is not my primary driver just for trail riding and short distance trips so I can put a second battery on the bench charger if I need to. I have an early 80's 2F engine with a stock alternator also...

I think thats enought to digest for now. Responses much appreciated.

if you use the isolator it charges both batterys but it seperates then on draw meaning like the wench runs off of one and when it dies the other will still start the truck. the way i have mine is i run the off road lights and wench off of the aux battery and the main battery for the truck stuff like starting lights ect

I have the National Luna setup. The way that it is configured I run the starter and the winch off the main battery and everything else, headlights, off road lights, radios etc off the aux battery. The alternator charges up both. It has been working pretty well overall. BTW I replaced the OEM fuse block with two Blue Sea 12 circuit fuse blocks. Both are mounted in the glove box. Plenty of room for expansion and additions.

thanks for the input guys... sounds like the isolator is worth the investment... i hit boaters world today and all bulk marine grade wire was 60% off; picked up some cable for a pretty good deal... i'll post some pics of my install after I'm done...
