I was wondering if anyone have any ideas on what could I do to unjam the driver's door. Yesterday I got out of the car and when I tried to get back in the door didn't open. All other door are fine.

I have a feeling that something go loose, but now I can't open it to find out..

I will appreciate any tips..

Thanks

Need more precise info: The key turns? It activates the other doors? The handle pulls up freely as if it's disengaged? Acts the same from the inside? etc.

Probably, you need to tear into it from the inside and see what's up. Happened to me in the middle of a cross country trip once. Turned out to be a little spring near the lock cylinder that I replaced with one from a hardware store for less than a buck.

Good luck and keep us posted

The key works as normal, it locks and unlocks the door. From the inside the lock switch work as normal. However when I try to open the door from the inside handle, it feels like it is locked. From the outside the handle feels different when its locked vs. unlocked. When Its unlocked it moves up then it feels a little like it is stuck.

Would it be possible to take the door panel from the inside with the door closed, or how can I go about opening the door. I'm going to try working on it on sunday. I'll report back with progress.

thanks

I indeed had to get into the door from inside the vehicle with the door closed, so it's possible. I know I didn't remove the seat or anything like that, so I must have just had it all the way back and probably reclined. I think I dug around in the door just enough to pop it open, and then finished the job properly after that.

Good luck,

Curtis

Tried to open the door without success. I took the pillar cover off partially. I couldn't take the panel off. So I tried to use a cloth hanger to see if I could pop it open to no avail..

Any ideas on how I might open the door. :)

Have you had a chance to thoroughly read through the thread Raven posted? There were a couple different ideas in there.

Hang in there,

Curtis

This problem should be reported to the NHTSA and to Toyota. Having the latching mechanism fail with the result of not being able to open the door from both the inside and outside is a safety issue that may merit a safety recall.

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ if you wish to follow up with a complaint.

I try again this weekend. I'll give the other tread a good read.
Thanks for your help.. I keep you postd.

Read my next to last post. The door will open (from the outside, with effort)if you will take the inside handle cover off and disconnect the rod.

This post scared me, so even though I just buttoned everything up from a speaker install (6.5 and 5.25 under factory grills BTW:D), I pulled it all apart again. The mech. in my '96 w/136k looked fine. I expected to at least see some deformation. Are the problem vehicles not garage kept -out of the heat of the direct sun? Usually parked with problem door towards the south (or north for those on the bottom of the planet)?

My truck was a garage kept, old lady driven 86K 80.....it was the passenger side.

I wouldn't worry about it, it is an easy fix if I can do it.

No big deal for a DD. Big deal on a family vacation. At least now I know its a screwdriver/10mm socket job.

Its been a while since my last post on this subject. I now finally got around to try and open the door. I got as far as removing part of the door panel and detaching the latch from the inside handle. I'm still unable to open the door. I think I made my situation worse, when trying to pull the latch with a wire, I managed to detach a spring that is connected to the inside latch mechanism. I'm not sure what can I do at this point. the door is totally shut. I thought that detaching the inside door latch was all I needed for the door to open. Am I missing something?

thanks for listening.

cheers

Unfortunatly this seams like it is becoming a common problem.

I think I've got this problem on the way. When opening the driver's door from the inside today the electric unlock clicked but woudn't unlock the door. At first the mechanical lock switch wouldn't move either, but with a bit of force it opened with a "sprong" type noise.

The noise made me picture a pushrod or something similar that's bent and catching on something.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? I have yet to open up the doors on an 80 and I'm not sure what's in there, but it sounds like I've got a problem with my PDL.

As long as you're ok with basic maintenance/repairs, you should carefully "tear" into a door asap. Lots of little things seem to go wrong in there eventually, so the sooner you're comfortable "going in" the better.

Like a lot of things, it's not a big deal at all after the fisrt time.

I had a drivers door that wouldn't open after I reshaped the door on a tree. When I got the interior panel off and tried working the push rod manually it still didn't work. It turned out that the lock/unlock pushrod wasn't moving quite far enough to let the open pushrod mechanism engage.

Wow - I know this is an old thread, but I'm glad I found it. Too late for me, but good to know. I just wonder if I should "go in" on the other doors.

Mine broke last summer while my 19 y/o had the LC in northern Minnesota. Had the kid take it to the local dealer and they fixed it for almost $500 - bloody hell!

But I was in St. Louis and the driver's door wouldn't open from either side so I was stuck and had to pay the $$$

I really wish I had known to look for this ahead of time.
