Builds dougbert's future 350 swap: How much torque is too much?

Scott is slowly working on the block, in this picture he has removed all the oil galley plugs and is preparing to tap in some threads.

Next week off to the alignment shop

I have received the following new parts:

8 inch harmonic balancer

I have ordered some of the ARP bolts for:

rods, mains, harmonic balancer, carb bolts, manifold and flywheel.

My machinist said JEGS gives a better deal than he can on these.

Any thought of paint-sealing the inside of the block? Pro's are it keeps any casting sand that *might* still be there sealed up and it does aid in oil drain-back. Con is that it's a PITA to do.

More work is being down at the machine shop.
These pics are my crank being turned down .020/.020 under

These 3 are the block back from the subcontractor machine shop.

Work done was:

1) crank aligned bored
2) decked
3) cylinders aligned bored, with torque plates

which aligns the cylinders better after the heads are torqued down.

The re-used rods came in balanced within 1 gram of each other.

Pistons will be coming next, and the rotating assembly will be balanced (internal) with the balancer and flywheel.

Finally, then .040 over bore and honing

Block is being bored today, but these pics are prior to his beginning. He has to torque the plate down first. He positioned
things for the pics.

Scott has chased all the bolt holes in the block and indicated that they really needed that.

Hope these pics and block rebuilding is useful for others. I have never seen the machining of a block before.
Scott has been great to teach me and allow me in the shop.

The block has been bored, now awaiting the pistons for final honing and rotating assembly balancing. First pic has the flywheel and 8 inch balancer on top,
to be used with the rotating assembly balancing.

Had to go .060 over as it started at .040, so I shall get a 360 CI SB Chevy,

when those are done, I can bring it home and assembly the short block. Now that it is getting warming, I am
looking forward to that.

$768 for the machine work then some more for the pistons and the balance.

Well, it has all been balanced, pistons and rings have arrived, bearings on the shelf.

Scott has to do a final cleaning and install the CAM bearings.

ARP bolts look great

Then I make some final payments

Finally, Made the last payment last month and we arranged for assembly this morning. Plastic Gauaged the mains, and one of the connecting rods and all were spot on.

Cylinders are at 4.060
Mains at .030 inch under
Connecting rods journals had to be redone to .020 inch under because one of them had a taper after being done .010 under.

I have it home and posted some pics below

$1400 or so from the machine shop.

Next time, I am thinking of buying a 383 short block for $2000, which would work okay - need another cruiser though - lol

Next I can do is a block paint job, pondering whether Chev Orange or something like Trollhole did.

A pic of a young friend, Ted, who loves to take engines apart. He helped me at the machine shop while Scott and I assembled the crank, installed pistons and torqued things down. He says he is talking with his dad (a dentist) about getting their own Criuser - hehehe a future cruiserhead

got the block painted chev orange with a POR-15 engine paint kit
Oil pump installed, next comes a 2-piece Edelbrock timing cover, then the new oil pan and the bottom end will be buttoned up

Thanks for this post. As I just got my first fj60 with a 350 crate engine and have been researching how to increase the torque. This thread is very helpful.

I knew that this was going to be a "slow" thread due the issue of getting money to pay for parts, but my story has a speed up:

My 2F engine at 238,000 miles is tired. Very tired. My symptom is blowby. ALOT of blowby out the valve cover PCV breather port.
My air filter is plugged with oil, the air cleaner is filled with oil, I have oil dripping down onto the cover, the manifolds, the distributor, etc, etc.

dougbert is wounded, but not dead.

So, after consulting with "jake" here in in heber, I will park my rig out at his "barn", where Alaska has been working as well as jake on the cruizer yard. I will then begin the disassembly of the 2F engine and will post items for sale in the classified ads area.

I have a Trollhole carb, less than a year old
ignition system
and a rebuilt head and rockers
6-1 header

With those sales, I can acquire some more SBC 350 parts (next is the cam) to continue the Vortec build

PICS - the smoke smells more of gasoline than of oil

#1 2000 RPMs and the output from the PCV breather port
#2 idle and the output as well
#3 ignition side of engine

Okay, will begin the tear out, but am looking for suggestion on WHAT things to leave in the engine space and/or WHAT things to take out while I do the pull/install?

Opinions on pulling vs leaving the grill and fenders off/on the rig anyone? Pluses and minuses?
