Hi all,

I've got some wind noise coming from my front doors or windows on my '97. I cleaned and reconditioned all the seals on the vehicle which appear to be in great shape. No change. I know there is a TSB out on this symptom ( 99-6-5 04/05/1999 Side Doors - Wind Noises). Anyone know what that TSB indicates is the problem?

I've done a bunch of seaches, but cannot find anything.

Thanks...

I get lots of wind noise from those big side view mirrors. Try flipping them in :D
Not sure what the TSB says but there is supposedly a "wind noise repair kit."

When I took my door apart I didn't put the plastic that I'd ripped off back on the door before I put the panel back on, now I get wind noise.

Has it rained where you live yet? Got wet door panels or floors?

This is interesting. I find my truck amazingly loud (for a Lexus ;) ) Does anyone know how you can tell if this has been installed / what's in the kit?

Cheers, Hugh

Hoser,

Not sure if the TSB applies to the ones manufactured post Feb. '97; but mine was suprisingly quiet when acquired at 36K (born Dec. 97 - ported to the US Jan. 98) - almost comparable to the LS400 and much better than the smaller RX300.

Frank.

Wow, you have the last of the last North American 80's. Mine wass born 9/96. I would guess that all 80's manufactured after 2/97 would get the update. I have an LS400 in the family and my 80 definitely makes a lot more wind noise.

I'm also curious to what's in the kit... Dan? Anybody?

Most wind-noise is air leaving (going from inside the cabin to outside). you can test this. If the sound seems to be coming from the top or front A-pillar area, you should be able to push on the seal. As you do, does the sound get worse?

The old-school way of fixing it is to bend the top of the door in (put your knee against the door panel while the door is open, and pull in on the top.

You might try brushing on talcum powder on the metal surface where the weatherstripping is supposed to make contact. Close the door firmly. Open and look to see if the weatherstriping is actually making contact all the way around.

I'd need to send my VIN to a dealer to figure out the build date. The first date CarFax had listed was 07-97, but I doubt that means much.

It's not a tremendous wind noise, just more that I think Toyota would put out. I pulled in my mirrors and there was no change in the noise. It also seems equal between the passenger and driver's door so that makes me think it's factory-ish.

The build date is on a placard on the driver's side door jam.

I stand corrected...6/97 according to the door.

Thanks....

Has your cruiser been in any significant accidents?

I have the same problem with a '94 FZJ80. I just take a drive in my FJ40 and it makes the 80 seem so quiet :D Actually this is a good question. Gives me some ideas.

No damage to the '97. Again, its not that bad. It's just noticable to me.

Sadly my 40 is in an Oregon barn right now (I'm in VB). IIRC, it MAY have had a wind leak or two now that you mention it...;)

Just to chime in, I have the same wind noise. It appears to come from the drivers side door frame near the top rear of the door. If I push on the frame it gets a little louder. No similar noise is noticible on the passenger side. It is not bad, but on the freeway noticible because the rest of the truck is so quite.

BTW it is a 1996.

A more controllable way to gently bend the upper door frame into the body a bit is to use an old tennis shoe. You put the tennis shoe at the base of the upper door frame and close the door against it, then press on the upper door frame to flex/bend it in a more controlled way than using your knee. It does not take much and you'll put a few more pounds of pressure on the window seal to seal out the noise. The shoe is simply to have something firm, yet soft enough not to damage the paint on the B pillar or door (or A pillar if the noise is up front). A little goes a long way here and bending it in an eighth inch would be considered dramatic. So, flex it a few times and go for a drive. Then repeat. Body shops do this all the time. Window up or down, but not halfway up.

Nope. Well under the driver's side floor mat there it's damp..

I talked with CDan on the phone today. He said "wind noise repair kits" tend to not be vehicle specific but are general kits. So no "replace gasket A with included gasket B" stuff.
